Hi all. As you can see, I am new to the forum. I recently read the Fastane Millionaire and it really snapped me out of my current mindset. Read paragraph below if you want to here about my (hopefully) shortlived slowlane journey (feel free to skip down for questions).
I went to school for accounting, currently in an accounting job, and definitely slowlane. The thing is I grew up wanting to start a business and slowly got brainwashed out of it. Accounting has the jobs, it's stable, etc, etc. I ended up taking some entrepeneurship and e-business classes my last year in school. It got me so excited. I started having some ideas float around, but then... work started. Then the CPA exam. And now it's been 1 year as of a few days ago and I feel so lucky to have chosen to read Fastlane Millionaire. It snapped me out of the mindset I grew into, the one everyone around me is plagued by. And now I'm here! To the questions...
Questions:
1. Web Design - I understand that there are both web designers and web developers. At what point is it foolish to outsource these rather than learn them yourself? My plan was to design the website myself. I feel I am fairly compotent artistically and don't know if it's necessary to get someone else to design the look and flow of my website. I've already began doing this on paper. However, from some limited research, you must be able to create a "skin" of your website so that you can take this to a programmer to code. How difficult is creating a skin and how customized can you get? Any guidance (or simply directing me towards good sources of information would be helpful) on that is appreciated. Also, if you think I'd be better off spending money on a professional... how much does that cost?
2. Programming - In regards to programming, I only know HTML. I just don't think it's a good use of my time to learn other coding languages, when there is so much to learn, I need to spend my time doing other aspects of this. I do plan on learning basics, so I can converse with programmers and not be completely in the dark, but beyond that... I need a professional quality website. I don't think it's a good use of my time to attempt to become competent enough. So, is this the right outlook?
3. Programming: Who to Hire - Would you suggest hiring a developer locally (I'm from NY, so cost of living, and therefore services, will be expensive) or via elance/odesk/etc?
4. Programming: What is the Cost - What are the costs I can expect from a website with the ability to have a bunch of users and webcamming and the ability for payment. I realize this sounds ridiculously generic (ha, like every webcam service), but it is more unique than that. As a result, I'm not sure it could be created off some cheaper, common platforum or would need something more customized. I'm sure the costs of the two options would be fairly different.
5. Programming: Protection - How do I protect myself from an idea being stolen. I understand someone professional already has enough on their plate and won't be opt to stealing ideas, but I think it's smart to try getting some protection. I understand that everyone usually overprotects their ideas, but it's still something I want to consider, especially once I've taken the time to flesh this out, create a design, etc.
I know there were a lot of questions and a bunch to read, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks!
