Just wanted to share a quick experience with the group, then I've got to get back to work...
This is kind of basic stuff, but I thought it might be helpful to someone that may be launching a new site, like we are.
A few weeks ago we had some analytic software (if that's what it's called) installed on our site to track where our traffic is coming from, what people are doing on the site, what they're clicking on, what our conversion rates are, etc. etc. (and keep in mind our site is still in development / beta mode)
We started out using SiteMeter; I wasn't overly impressed with it because I felt it lacked a good high level overview and statistics. So we had the developer un-install that and install Google Analytics. Ugh! Found out that Google Analytics pretty much sucks for some of the specific info we need (IP tracking, sequence of page views, etc.). So we had the developer re-install SiteMeter. We're running both analysis tools right now, together they're giving us a good overview of the info we need.
Then a few days ago we installed ClickTale. Although it's an expensive service ($99 / mo.), it can really give you some valuable feedback - for those of you that don't know about it, it actually records what people are doing on your site. Actual mouse movements, data entered on forms, clicks and everything. It's very cool.
So with the three of these tools running, we've received some valuable feedback and have came up with a marketing strategy that I think is going to pay off, thanks to these simple tools.
My recommendation - Installing both SiteMeter and Google Analytics on your site can give you the "whole picture"; where one tool may be lacking on its own, the other seems to fill in the blanks. And if you need detailed video tracking of what people are actually doing on your site, check out ClickTale.
