hello everyone, I'm an Architecture student, 2 years away from graduating.
I'm not your typical Architecture student, I don't really love what I'm studying although I find it very interesting. I'm not devoted to Architecture, there are many things I enjoy doing more. I don't talk about Architecture all the time, and I don't read only Architectures books (actually, I rarely read them).
But, Architecture is a very broad and complex field. Being an architect requires you to have good knowledge in a vast array of different disciplines such as history, building technology, engineering, CAAD, drawing, building laws, sociology,... .
You cannot approach it without the right motivation and commitment.
I work hard, and when I put myself in the right mindset, I know I can accomplish a lot, so until now I've been pretty successful in my studies.
But this is what I have in mind when I think about opening an architecture firm: can this make me wealthy (and possibly, fast)? can this give me the freedom that I want? I don't think: will I be able to design all the buildings that I want for the rest of my life, like many architects do.
So after this "introduction", my question is, is it possible to create a fastlane-business in the field of architecture or am I better off trying something else. I've been studying successful architects in the last months and one thing they all have in common (which I lack) is a strong passion and dedication for their profession. I know I could grow my (future) firm if I approach it like a businessman and treat it like a business, but I don't think this would actually be very "fastlane", because:
- Designing a building, from start until built, can take several years. So that can really slow down growth.
- There is no room for "errors". Most successful businessmen never got it the first time, so how does that translate to architecture? If I build a firm that takes already a lot of money and time to grow...it takes longer to make errors and learn from them. And the consequences of your errors might be greater.
- As I said, architecture is already a broad field, add to it the complexity of running a business and you have the perfect recipe for madness. As a person that wants to know everything It would be difficult to prioritize.
- Architects don't generally "sell" their businesses. An architecture firm is usually a lifelong commitment. So the possibility of retiring young is much smaller.
Ok, I hope someone managed to read. Maybe I'm approaching this with the wrong mindset, maybe I'm only focusing on the negative. I would like to hear what you think!
