Are you driven by profit or are you driven by purpose?
Elon Musk made $180 Million with the sale of his company, PayPal.
What did he do with his wealth?
He put:
The Lamborghini gets your attention, and then it blinds you from the path you're supposed to take.
What color is that Lamborghini? Silver? Mirror? Is Mirror even a color?
Stop and shift your focus to the following:
When we get started out on this journey, we are motivated my those superficial desires.
I've been in your position before, and the only reason I write this for you is because when I was driven by making money and profit, it left me living from paycheck to paycheck in a job I hated for two years.
If you want to have any success on this journey, there is one life altering shift you can choose to make right now.
Switch your motivation from profit to purpose.
Sounds counter-intuitive, doesn't it?
Think of this as me standing at a fork in the road holding a huge sign. There are two directions you can go from here:
1. If you go straight ahead, set your purpose, and drive towards it regardless of what happens along the way, you'll eventually get there.
When you follow this direction, you'll be on a road where it's a straight line to your desired outcome, but the road is long and may be boring and rough at times. At first, you may want to give up along the way, but if you trust me and keep driving in that one direction towards your purpose, you will get there when you least expect it.
When you get a flat tire or the car breaks down, you fix it and keep pushing forward because when you are completely aligned with your purpose, nothing can tempt you to go off track.
When you see those signs that promise a shortcut, or the quicker way to riches, you ignore them, because your purpose is so strong and you will do anything to get there. Eventually, all those shortcuts that are promised to you along the way seem to fade out of sight, because you know you aren't going to take them anymore.
When you align with your purpose and put on those blinders, nothing can stop you. But remember, you'll have to drive through some rough patches and put in the work along the way to get there.
What is your purpose?
2. If you turn left, and choose the road where you are driven by profit alone, you'll be tempted to follow each and every one of the signs that screams "Shortcut to riches." Whenever you don't find the money right away, you turn on the next road and hope you find your money there. The pattern continues and eventually it feels like you're lost in a maze that you can never get out of.
With each turn, you are back at the beginning, wondering why you haven't gotten anywhere (heres a hint- three left turns and you're back where you started)
What happens if you keep driving straight towards one purpose?
There will be those that listen and those that don't, and the direction you choose will ultimately lead to two completely destinations. I can tell you where both decisions lead you, because I've been down both roads before.
I turned left and chased the money.
Can building a website that sells cat toys make me money? Yes...unless I don't see results right away and assume it's time to....
Build an app (back at the beginning),
Clean carpets (back at the beginning),
Make soap (back at the beginning),
Build a SaaS (back at the beginning),
etc.
There are a million roads to wealth, and if you are only driven by the money, you'll be easily tempted to make that turn and drive down the next one, only to give up and try something else at the first road block.
But when you set your purpose, you won't be distracted when you hear a friend is making $50,000 per month selling on amazon, or $100,000 a month with his new SaaS.
When you are driven by purpose, you keep pushing forward on the problem you're destined to solve, regardless of how tempting it may seem to quit at times.
Are you willing to die for your purpose?
Ok, maybe that's a little heavy for this conversation, but some people are because, to them, fulfilling their purpose is more rewarding than superficial desires that come as a side-benefit.
It wasn't until I committed to building ONE app company for a full year of my life until I build the very business that resulted in close to a million app downloads, set me free, and yes...turned a profit in the process.
When I was motivated by money, I switched course at every chance I got because each road can lead to that success, and each road is just as long at the last. How tempted are you to turn around? It's pretty tempting when you see all these different roads and can't stick with one.
And the good news? Your purpose doesn't have to your life purpose, or to save the world and bring humans to mars like Elon Musk did when he put $180 Million of his profits into his purpose.
If your purpose is to create a more efficient garbage bag, or skin care product....set that purpose, commit to it for a year, two years, a lifetime, and don't let anything stop you from achieving it.
