Hey everyone,

My name is Jack. I am a fourth year student in college, studying computer engineering and computer science, with a passion for software/web dev and hardware(fpga/asic) design. I have had two internships in the past, one hardware and one software, and I’ve realized that I don’t enjoy working for others as much as I thought. I’d rather build my own project, form a team, and develop something that can be used by many people, ideally with the possibility of getting funding or backing.

This past year, my roommate and I tried to develop an application to track where people are in the internship application process. For example, when Amazon opens up applications, you could see when people receive online assessments or interview invitations, which would help you know if you’ve been ghosted. We also want to provide interview formats and general insights into the application process for tech internships. We pitched the idea to a friend, and he liked it. We reached out to people on LinkedIn to gather resumes and internship-related info. Surprisingly, a few people not only shared their information but also expressed interest in helping us build the app. We ended up with a talented team from different schools, and we really thought we’d be able to build the application.

Unfortunately, because of classes and internships, we didn’t have enough time to execute the idea, and over time, our team fizzled out. My roommate and I tried to post on LinkedIn to get more engagement, and while we got some interest in the beginning, it wasn’t as much as we had hoped. It was disappointing because we worked on the idea for so long and had a strong team with great backgrounds. But due to circumstances and mismanagement, we weren’t able to complete it.

However, we learned a lot from the experience, especially about how challenging it is to manage a team, particularly one spread across different time zones and states. Now, with the lessons we’ve learned, we’re hoping to start something new. We’ve been reaching out to people to learn how they’re building businesses and startups. We’re particularly interested in understanding the process of taking an idea, validating it, building a team, getting funding, and executing it. That’s what we hope to gain from this forum—insights into the process and some guidance on how to build something from the ground up. I look forward to meeting like minded people with a desire to build things and potentially people that I can learn the intricacies of building successful businesses.
