I am in the process of ringing up businesses to ask for a particular product and service I need. I just rang a company who came up when I put "washing machine short term rental, London, UK".

A lady answered the phone and I politely enquired about their delivery range, she replied in an annoyed tone, "No, we are based in Derbyshire, as it says on our website!" and then hung up.

If she had been polite and waited for my answer, I would have said, "Oh okay, thank you anyway. By the way, you should get your Google guy to make the words 'London' and 'UK/United Kingdom' into negative keywords. That way you won't get annoying people like me who have cost you by clicking on the ad, then waste your time with a phone call."

I imagine she would have said something along the lines of, "Oh wow! Thanks, I never thought of that. We don't want anyone outside of Derbyshire, so I'll do that. Thanks."

Instead, she is still paying for clicks that will NEVER convert into sales.

Even if people aren't your customers, be nice to them, interact on a human level and even if you don't get something material out of it, you'll feel better inside.

Also, pay attention to those negative keywords! A subject close to @Andy Black's heart, I'm sure :)

Both subjects are close to my heart. Great little story. Thanks for sharing.

The business owner knows she’s a bitch. But he definitely can’t answer the phone and needs her doing it, and he’s got 90 other fires he’s putting out and he’s saving the customer service training for later because it works fine 90% of the time and right now he’s struggling with wondering why his ppc costs are so damn high.

He hired her because she had more skills and experience, ignoring her personality to save him having to train someone, now he’s stuck with her, no amount of training can fix a bad personality

He could have hired the right person with less skill and experience, spent a week (if that) training them, and he’d never have had to deal with this bitch or customer service again

Or the business owner treats her like shit... either way, there are lessons in communication woven in there somewhere.

If she was capable of understanding these words, she would not be sitting behind a phone!
