Many lessons that can be taken away from a TV show but felt the effects for one of them personally a while back...
The House of Cards scene I am talking about was when Frank Underwood helped his driver/bodyguard out (in season 1?) and then told the audience that he did it because "it was that it required so little of him to do something so big for his bodyguard" and therefore got 100% loyalty from him.
The Story
This happened a few months ago so my memory is blurry.. I live in a building where there is a concierge/porter service to hold your packages for you when they get delivered. There's a night shift porter who was extremely unfriendly to me and to be honest, quite ineffective at times.
Got a knock one late evening from him to go all the way down and buildings away to pick up my parcel... which I did later. I spoke to the porter and he told me he haven't had dinner yet at 11 pm and probably will starve his way through his midnight/early morning shift because he didn't bring money (or ran out of money... I wasn't sure about this)
Didn't have cash with me but I got back to my flat, got a couple bucks and went to him to offer to buy him dinner in a convenience store nearby. His dinner cost me less than £5 with drinks included. I did this because I don't think anyone should starve their way through their night shift and to be honest, it didn't cost me that much.
Fast forward about 2 months later... I went to collect my parcel at late night and had some issues with it. The man greets me with a BIG GIANT smile (first time in the past 2 years of living here) and was more than happy to help me with my issues. I just got upgraded to Porter Service Premium Plus!
The lesson to takeaway here is this can be applied not just to me and my porter or everyday working folk that you come across but your customers, your suppliers and your staff. I could have just as easily sat at home and turned on the TV instead of taking 5 minutes out to help this man out.
I am absolutely certain if you keep this in mind, you will see extraordinary results in your business relationships and a loyal following. As MJ says, "Think Big, Act Small".
What examples/policies that you have in your business that is to that effect?
