If you've read The Fastlane Millionaire book there is a section in there about relationships. Without going into too many details about that section; it basically says to ditch your significant other if they aren't supportive of you and your fastlane mindset.
That section was probably the only part of the book I really hated. I completely disagree with it. I believe that each of us has a soul mate. Love and family relationships are the only 2 things in life that really matter. Take away your money; its all you have left.
While I do agree that you should end relationships of abuse; but if you love someone who isn't abusive you should do everything in your power to protect that relationship. If you love someone, no money in this world is worth losing your soul mate over.
So what's with the title of this post anyway?
Behind Every Successful Man Is a Surprised Woman!
I read that phrase on a sign in a boutique my wife made me go to today (uhhg!). For some reason it struck a chord with me. I quickly reflected on my own life and how that's true. ... even my wife chuckled over it.
How can we really expect our loved ones to support the fastlane when everything they've been taught tells them not to? Is it fair to argue with them that their advice or parents advice about the slowlane is complete BS? Its not their fault at all. That is how our society is raised and its so deep-rooted in our blood that trying to argue against it almost sounds blasphemous. It's not they're fault!
This is a reality that everyone who is in a relationship will probably have to face. It may not be with your spouse, it could be a friend or a neighbor or parents. But people are going to doubt you; and trust me they can be very convincing.
The solution is not to run and hide from these people. You can't. We're surrounded by slowlaners-- its a fact of life. Accept it and move on.
So how can we deal with unsupportive people in our lives?
I'm certain there is only one way to handle this. Which is to: Prove them wrong! Your actions will prove you right and not your words. There's no convincing someone otherwise; you have to show them.
When I first started in business I was constantly belittled by many. I constantly got told by in-laws to further my education or to please go get a real job. At times it would wear me down so much that I started to doubt myself. But something inside me told me I needed to keep working hard and someday I would be able to prove them wrong. It drove me to push myself further; to achieve more. ... but it didn't happen overnight. It was a process.
One thing I will promise you is that if you love someone who doesn't believe in you or the fastlane; if you prove them wrong they will have a change of heart. There's not a person in your world that won't support you or believe you IF you are successful.
I love my wife and appreciate how much she forced me to grow (even if at times it wasn't the most supportive). Our spouses know us the best and it gets hard to see past our weaknesses. They owe us nothing until we can prove to them that we are successful. The road is rough and rocky; but the journey will make you who you are. Don't give up on yourself just because others do. This world is ripe for the taking-- it will give you whatever you want; but it doesn't come easy.
There's no need to run from relationships; surprise them! Once you've surprised them, they will be the strongest support group you could ever have. They will love you and no longer doubt you.
