My name is Nik. I am 35 and live in Westchester County, NY. The company I work for is a real estate development, owner, and construction company in the medical/office building sector.
I just read and thoroughly enjoyed TMF book and will be reading the other 2 shortly. I have been at my current job for almost 14 years and started working here straight out of college. I moved through the ranks and make roughly between $16K - $19K per month depending on the commission component of my pay. I am an immigrant and moved to the USA in 1996 with my parents. The things my parents did to build our lives here in America will forever be engraved in my mind and is something I will forever cherish. Their work ethic, selflessness, love, and commitment to the American dream has made me into the man I am today. I have never been afraid of a challenge, getting my hands dirty, or working long hours. It's something I almost consider normal and during my younger years I would often work 4am - 10am daily cleaning banks and then finish the day off working at a local Deli. I am a quick learner and can adapt in many environments.
My parents certainly have a slowlane mentality despite the wonderful things they have built and achieved. I make a good living, should be saving a lot more, and I feel like I need to change my relationship with money now. I love my career, I love what I do, and I love how close I live to my job (10 minutes). I feel like I have a tremendous grasp of my job and I have created a smooth running machine at work. I go into work everyday still eager, happy, and fulfilled. I've turned down offers for 20-30% more pay as it would require me to go into Manhattan and the ease of my current commute is something I truly value. However, the job is time consuming, right now it's a standard M-F 9am - 5pm, although it took me working weekends and 14 hour days the first 7-8 years in order to be able to setup this "smooth running machine at work". But no matter how smooth it is, the owner requires me to be in the office M-F 9am - 5pm. So, the many pros of the job are almost all negated by how time consuming it is and one of the main components of TMF book.
I am starting my journey now to set up a plan, and figure out what I need to do to get into the Fastlane. Obviously, I am not ready to quit my job. But I have been fairly successful in investing (stocks & bitcoin) and also real estate (I own a 2 family house with my father and rent both units out). I've had discussions with my father about selling the house and using the funds to invest with but right now it's just an option that I am thinking through. I've been offered a full General Contracting practice to purchase the client list, name, branding, office, etc. but this will just turn me into an owner with still a time consuming job so although it's right in my wheelhouse, I want a fastlane job not one where I need to manage employees daily. I guess I am still in the very early stages and do not have many "concrete" plans or endeavors that I am ready to jump into now. BUT I am ready to begin my journey of change.
