Hi everyone, I've just joined the forum after a YouTuber recommended Millionaire Fastlane and I spent a whirlwind week reading it.
So glad to finally find a book that spoke to the quiet discontent I've felt in life since I was... maybe about 15 years old!? Amongst my teenage angst I remember thoughts popping up here and there about my life ahead feeling 'so predictable' and 'why does the world have to be this way'. Regardless I was extremely studious at school, signed up to study engineering at uni, and ended up entering the workforce as a data analyst.
Since then (I'm 36 now) I've made conscious changes to my life every few years due to the discontent of wondering if there was more - things like taking a sabbatical 5 years into my career to move country and 'work anywhere but at a desk', taking a 3 month bootcamp to make a career change into graphic design, realising my old analytics career was probably ok but changing industries was the way to go, moving countries again while pursuing this etc. But it never seemed to solve the issue.
While I have many friends who have diligently been climbing the corporate ladder the whole time, it's something I was never keen on. So I kept moving laterally and taking career risks that none of my friends would have dreamed of doing (the usual responses were "but you'll have a gap on your resume!" and "but how can you afford to do that?!").
While I've had this discontent the whole time, it's only now as we're approaching midlife that my career-focused friends have started to sit back in their senior level roles and wonder - is this it? Especially when they realise the increased time and responsibilities is only being met by marginal salary increases.
Anyway! Long post... but now I realise there is another road I can take, one that doesn't involve climbing career ladders, lamenting over 9-5 life and salary ceilings, and a predictably mundane life. I've been too fearful to go out and start my own thing, as no one else in my family and friends have done this. But now I have the confidence to put on the entrepreneurs' hat and begin my new path. Starting today.
