This is a letter an individual wrote me. I was basically looking for a little direction. I have a huge "database" of ideas in my head and I find it to be more of a burden than benefit most times. I tend to get get extremely bogged down with ideas and thoughts. I have an issue with drilling down on an idea so much that I exhaust myself. So this person gave me some advice and I'd like to share it with you as well.
Hi Cory -
Find someone that needs help with something, right now, and is happy to pay you to help them with it. Then focus on that.
Once you've helped that person with something, see if you can provide that same solution/product to someone else. Perhaps adapt it to their needs. Repeat.
Much of success is luck. What the public loves will usually be a surprise. So do many things, giving each one 100%, but if the public just isn't excited about it, walk away and do something completely different. Knowing this in advance, your first step should be to just do anything useful to others, realizing it's just the first of your many endeavors and shouldn't be taken too seriously.
Ask, "What can I do that will really add a TON of value to people's lives?" or "What would be so damn helpful that people's jaws would drop?"
Or if you're still unsure, go meet in person with a few of your target people, and ask them what would massively change their lives. Then see if you can make that happen.
Example: Seth's Blog: First, ten
Remember that it's not just creating a business or doing what you love - it's finding that intersection of what you love and what people seem very willing to pay for. See If it's not a hit, switch on Vimeo I did lots of stuff that was "doing what I love", but it took 12 years of experimentation to find the thing that I loved to do AND people really wanted to pay for.
If I had to do it all over again, I would have experimented faster, tried more different things. So, that's my advice to you. Change your business *weekly*, if that's what it takes, until you find an offering or service or product that really seems to resonate with people.
You have all the options in the world to make your dream come true. There are no limits. You just need to be creative.
Hope this helps a bit.
