Well , I guess you can call this one of my monthly rants/ fastlane lessons. This time I am talking about money. How many times have you told yourself or heard someone say “I’m doing it only for the money.†? I have said it multiple times to myself and heard that saying from people tenfold. Last week , NYU was visiting my school for students who are interested in attending their school. Just me and another classmate signed up. On the day of the visit, we met up in the library so I asked him what he was interested in studying. His response “ I am applying to the Stern School of Business.†I go “O really, me too, what part of business are you looking to get into.?†He goes “Anything in Investment Banking, you make a ****load of money in that. My uncle does it and so does my grandfather. I am doing it only for the money.†I reply “ Really, you know you’re going to be unhappy if your only doing it for the money. I’m going to study entrepreneurship , and I’m not doing it for the money, I’m doing it because I can help contribute society and charge them for solving their problems.†And finally he replies “I don’t care if I will be happy or not.†Hmmm, so you’re going into Investment Banking just for the money , and you don’t care if you will be happy or not? Sounds miserable to me.
The problem with that conversation was he was motivated solely by making money. Too many times we go to work or start a business simply for the money. All we want is to have the customer hand over the money to us and make a quick profit for ourselves. Well, I hate to break it to you, but if your simply going into business for your own “selfish motives†(taking that from MJ) you’ve already failed in your business. If you take a step back and think why you are really starting a business and your answer is to help people solve their problems, BINGO go ahead and begin. Your motives are on the right track. When you go into business solely to make money, your customers can smell your greediness and they will take their money and go somewhere else. The reason- You only care about how their dollars look in your hands, they only care how you can help them. When you don’t care about your customer , they won’t give you their money.
So when your thinking about starting your own business, think deeply about why you are starting it up. Do you really want to help people with their problems or do you want to just get rich? When customers see that you really want to help them, they will pay you and will definitely bring you more customers with their comments and raves. When you just want their $$$ they see it and will put you out of business. Remember- Positive reviews travel far but bad reviews travel further.
Striving to help your customers add value to their lives and solve their problems is- Fa$tlane :fastlane:
Going into business to just get rich and not care about your customers is called "Start-up suicide"- :fryingpan:
Note: I have nothing against making money, the only thing is I am trying to help you avoid that trap in business called "Just in it to Get it" mentality.
