This is something that I've been thinking about for the past week. So I thought I'd post it here to get other people's thoughts on it.
Back in April I was at Petsmart looking at a couple feeder guppies for my pond. I told the guy at Petsmart that I would put them into my koi pond and that they wouldn't make it past winter. His response was that they would probably only last a few days here because anyone who buys them is using them as feeder fish. So with that in mind, I purchased 4 of them.
Over the summer these 4 guppies multiplied into over 1000 guppies. My pond had guppies galore and new babies almost daily. In fact, I was wishing I never bought them at some point because there were so many. Then winter came and all the guppies are now gone.
Part of me is sad because I knew that these 1000 guppies had no chance to make it through the winter. So my original purchase to save 4 guppies could be seen as killing 1000 of them.
But then I think back and if I hadn't bought the original 4 guppies, these other 1000 guppies would have never existed. So is it better for then to have been born and lived a life of a few months or never at all?
Should I buy guppies next spring again?
