I have had a small jerky business sort of mom and pop set up. It started as making jerky for fun for myself and other people. My prices are fair, however below market I sell my product at $2 per oz. I sell 5 oz bags for $10 then noticed a problem from my general audience of being fit people. Those who were hungry, and just wanted a snack couldn't find anything convenient yet healthy, So I started making protein cookies that are a great hit. I've gotten a ton of compliments and often give my product away for people to test and they end up ordering more.
Common questions: Can I grow this to a large scale? IMO YES! there plenty of room for an over saturated product if you put your heart into your product and know it's for a good cause (mine is to introduce a healthy snack that has better taste than my competition). The downside is it has a shorter shelf life and needs to be refrigerated since my jerky isn't loaded with sodium and preservatives.
Am I actually providing a service to my customer base? or just paper chasing? HELL NO! I know I'm not paper chasing it just seems to follow rather than flaunt the money I make I reinvest into our company. I have recently purchased a commercial grade dehydrator and deli slicer with profits. I don't need a fancy Rolex or the latest iPhone I'm happy with my $15 sports watch and 2009 diesel pick up.
I usually wake up early and do something productive for the company whether that buying supply, sanitizing equipment, starting processing and curing jerky, reaching out to new customers, reaching out to other business owners for growth opportunity whatever it may be. I have my full-time career as a law enforcement officer, and I absolutely love it! I use the benefits and details pay well for the time being and continue to grow the business on the side.
Any advice would greatly be appreciated! How can I increase growth? How do I get more customers? How can I produce more product, or is there a way to have larger scale shipments made exactly how I flavor and season without compromising quality? Is it worth investing my own brick and mortar building? My end state would be Western Style Saloon type shops that you can walk into sample jerk, pick what type you would want how much, as well as be known as a worldwide industry.
Thank you for any advice!
Respectfully,
Daryl Mackiewicz
