Hey everyone,
Thought I would drop in and say hi - my name is Chris, I've just turned 26 and I am currently living in Wellington the capital of New Zealand (NZ). I have been in NZ all my life and been in Wellington for 4 years now. It's a beautiful harbor city and if you haven't seen it, you should come visit! When I'm not working at my slowlane job in IT I am rowing (hence my username mrOARsome), reading books or browsing the web.
As well as IT, I have a previous background in web development and have been involved in quite a few US based direct marketing campaigns. I have witnessed first hand 'Fastlaners' becoming overnight millionaires through various product launches. I still remember one particular launch for an author who I will call 'Neil'. Neil being the busy man he was had not actually dealt with the company I worked for directly. It wasn't until the day of his launch that we had even heard his voice. Neil was launching a highly anticipated DVD series and we were responsible for the website hosting the offer. We had to ensure the website and payment system was ready to go at exactly 8:00am US time, which meant a very early morning for us here in New Zealand. The time came and we switched the coming soon countdown page for the live offer page and watched as traffic peaked on the server. All seemed fine...
Suddenly the phone started ringing. It was Neil himself in his thick southern US ascent - he was panicing. PayPal had closed his account as it suspected some kind of scam taking place on his account - it was no scam, his launch was just going extremely well and money was pouring in from all over the world! Bleary eyed, I had to quickly concentrate and change the website to point at a new payment processor while Neil worked with PayPal to unlock his other accounts. Finally a few hours after the launch PayPal had unfrozen most of Neil's accounts and the offer was over.
Because of the payment issues, this was the first time during a product launch I had seen the financial side of it. I quickly punched the numbers into a calculator, Neil had become a multimillionaire from one product in the span of a few hours. I couldn't believe it - I even punched the numbers in again thinking I had made a mistake. How could someone make that amount of money in a few hours?!
Neil called us again, and this time instead of panic in his voice it was sheer joy. He was ecstatic - he wanted to know what a great job we had done and where to send the pizzas and beer. He has no idea of course it was now 5am in the morning where we were and we were on the other side of the world making for a challenging pizza delivery! He exclaimed "Dont worry, I will figure something out". The next day at lunch time a local pizza delivery man wandered into the office with a few boxes of Pizza. It turns out Neil had called them all the way from the US and thanks to a generous tip had also persuaded them to stop by at the nearest liquor stop for a an extra item not on the menu; a nice cold box of beer!
Ever since this run in with Neil the idea of making money from digital products on the internet stuck in my head. I was only 17 at the time but thought any thing was possible. I did have some minor success, I sold a compilation CD of software for Windows Phone (Apple's app store destroyed that market!), sold a membership card to students for cheap drinks and even made some money from affiliate marketing of lingerie(I still have my first cheque for $21.48 framed on my wall)! However, after a decade I haven't stuck that million dollar idea and it wasn't until I read Millionaire Fastlane did I realise my mistakes. For the most part, it was my desire for instant riches for no or little work, but also limiting my market.
Anyway, I have a big idea that I am fleshing out and this time plan on spending a lot of time and effort on it and best of all its mass marketable! I hope to run this idea past a few of you out there when its comprehensible and look forward to reading about others successes and even failure stories - I think if any thing, I have learnt more from my failures than anything else in life!
