Here is a theory that Snowbank and I discussed last year about SEO. I almost wonder if I should post this, but here goes.
This is why IMO as a business owner, you should learn SEO and not outsource it. Especially if you have an online business making $1000-$5000 a month.
Assume I have a store making $2,000 a month as does my competitor.
Me: I know SEO
Competitor 1: Doesn't know SEO, but know's of it.
Both of us are #4 and #5 in Google.
Competitor 1 goes out and gets SEO bids. Minimum bids he get's is $500/mo from Joe Blow SEO. This SEO company will cost him 25% of his profit but he must keep up so he reluctantly hires the guy at $500/mo.
Let's look at any business. If you spend $500 with an SEO company, you are paying for overhead, management and reports. How much of your money is going to actual work. Let's say the SEO company takes $250 off the top for profit (it's usually alot more). Let's say he's an USA SEO company that doesn't go overseas. So you are getting $250 worth of American SEO labor which equates to 50 links ($5 a link).
Now, I decide that I also want to spend $500/mo on SEO. But because I know SEO, I decide to spend my SEO budget on links, packages, articles, etc... and I also go overseas. I don't need any management or reports. My $500 is going to pure labor. $500 overseas would probably get me 250 links.
So fast forward 6 months. My site has received 1500 links and my competitor's site has received 300 links. There is just no way he can keep up without spending more money. And of course, he won't because as I pull away and take more of his business, he becomes tighter with his money. He would have to spend his full $2000/mo to get the same amount of SEO work done as me. We know he will never do that so he will never catch up.
Basically he is spending $500 for 50 links and I can spend $100 for the same. My additional $400 spent monthly just pulls away from him even further.
Note: Obviously the numbers are all made up and SEO is not all about how many links you get a month. But you all get what I mean and I hope you see why you can't compete in this field with an owner who understands SEO.
BTW, if you didn't understand the title. Here's a link
