Alright guys, I know many of you love cars, so any advice is welcome and might as well save my life (for real!).
So...my situation is this - now, in my early 30s I finally was able to afford a car. Never had a typical dad who would teach you how to drive. Took my driving classes in mid-twenties. Today I went for my first drive with a very experienced friend, we went through many tricky parts of the city, and at least 5 times I had CRAZY luck. Just got back, and I'm so exhausted, as if I was laboring all day.
My pain points:
- to get moving quickly after I stop
- being aware of complete situation all the time (what happens in front of me, behind me and on sides)
- parking and turning in small spaces, feeling just if I had 2 more eyes it would be all good
Manual transmission is not helping me as well, but it's a standard here. I really enjoy the ride itself, when the road is empty, but as soon as there are too many external factors to worry about (cars, traffic lights, pedestrians) it just gets too overwhelming keeping an eye on everything.
Really stupid situation but I will tackle it just like I would anything else. Do you have any advice guys?
My thinking was to first get down the basic stuff until it's instinct, even if it means I'll just drive around the block for a month, while this friend of mine (who was a racer, and drives for 50+ years) insists that I can't ever learn like that, and have to go "into the fire" and under pressure day after day until I adapt.
Any opinion and advice welcome. I realize for most of you guys, especially US based this may be a silly story, but everyone has their own situation and this is mine, what to do. At least I'm dealing with it.
Thanks.
