This is as much to share my re-journey as it is to foster conversation to anyone that might feel a little stuck in the mud.
I make no bones about it I'm in a strange place at the moment.
My priorities have changed. I have 3 beautiful kids and a wife who has thought tooth and nail to grow with me in a world where growing some success for us has had to share the co-pilot seat with our relationship. Well into my thirtys, having lost my uncle, dad and grandmother in recent years on one side of the family and two grandparents on the other who aren't long for the world, it's made it ever more clear that being burried deep in the trenches day in day out at this point isn't sustainable or what I want.
'Doing it again the same way again' doesn't really feel a viable option. It simply isn't. But neccessity is the mother of all creation as they say.
The last few years my b2b consultancy business blew up and I earned more than ever before.
The last year - I won't say it imploded but a perfect storm of things going wrong has lead to today where it's requiring more of my time and making less money, for now at least. Major clients' projects folded at just the perfect time, with projects onboarded to fill the void following suit. It hasn't been catastrophic, but just as things come back, another project folds and growth takes a back seat. It looks like that rollercoaster has the opportunity of repeating in the next month - another major project will go down - or it will continue and it will become non-negotiable to ramp up the off-ramp.
The next steps are probably the same either way.
Now, I was always adamant that I needed to diversify to stop this - but unfortunately as I was putting together a SAAS to supplement the business, the projects folded which had a knock on effect of slowing the development of the SAAS and pushing back the full scale launch which increases the short term dependence on consulting. This will be the 12month and onwards focus.
So here I am, in a place where it's not quite at starting again, but it is at a place of acknowledging that I need to build again - and build differently - and having a family and currently undertaking a dream home build - I need to do it in a way that is different from before, namely one that is much, much more time efficient and scalable.
Now, wherever you look at the moment, you have shills trying to tell you that coaching is the way. Others? Marketing (fact, there are few marketers that truly know their craft - I am not one of them) Or build this community, sell this course and so on. And I've thought about it, 'grow your mindset' 'start your dream business' 'learn how to use x software to propel yourself in y job', 'how to become a construction cost consultant'. All of which I've got stripes in but it feels a very 'empty', unsustainable way to approach it. Maybe I'm very wrong.
Maybe that's a very narrow view of the world. But ''buy this course to make 100k in this industry'' when I've answered the question as to why I'm eying up selling a course on it rather than doing it seems somewhat false.
So I find myself feeling like a 19 year old again trying to pick a direction, ignore the noise and find something that offers a short term change and long term sustainable and exponential growth.
The old addage is true. I either find 30 people to sell $1000 of services to, or 3000 to sell $100 of services to and anywhere in between.
It's funny how the habits of doubts, procrastination and good old wheels spinning in the mud can crop up after years of growth and success. Whereas I had grown to ignore the internet en mass, it feels polluted with get rich quick shills, shiny objects and convenient opportunities.
So it got me to thinking, how would you approach 'starting from scratch' again? Would you do anything differently?
