I'm a huge movie buff. In fact, I bought the house I live in today specifically because the basement dimensions suited the movie theater I ultimately built inside of it.

I'm in a bit of a movie rut these days, so I can't recommend anything SUPER recent, except perhaps Joker which I thoroughly and completely enjoyed (I didn't look at it as a Batman film, I looked at it more like a self contained "what if" story and I thought it was damned fantastic).

Here are some of my favorites from over the past few years that I don't think got the mainstream attention they deserved (except perhaps from other movie buffs):

Sci Fi

Moon - Some damn proper psychological sci-fi about a guy on a 3-year mission mining helium from the moon who encounters a bit of a... uhh... personal crisis. The less you know the better before watching.

Arrival - Again, just some damn good sci-fi, also not an action movie. All about communication with aliens. Fascinating.

Ex Machina - Noticing a trend? Such a good movie. Genius creates an AI woman and brings in a tester to see if the creation passes the turing test. So, so damn good.

Annihilation - You've probably heard this one crop up in just about any movie discussion about sci fi since it came out (and for good reason). Has a bit of everything and it's done really, really well.

A Monster Calls - This one is goddamn touching. Like, I'm basically dead inside and I almost cried a few times throughout this film. A monster visits a boy to help him cope with some serious shit.

Colossal - A monster movie, that is only barely about the monsters, and more about a relationship between two people in a small town, and it's super weird, and uhh... yeah.... Do you like saying "what the F*ck?" but in a good way that makes you want to keep watching? This is that movie.

Horror

(Worth noting that I'm a HUGE horror fan and can't stand generic torture porn bullshit, so these suggestions are good damn movies)

A Quiet Place - A great and unique idea about "don't make a noise" done SUPERBLY. It's beyond rare that I have literally no complaints about any part of a horror movie. This one nailed everything.

Overlord - I'm almost hesitant to put this on the list because it's not nearly as "technically good" as the rest from a pure filmmaking standpoint. But it's so fun I just HAD to. It's a "war horror" film about soldiers dropped behind enemy lines the day before D-Dday who discover a secret nazi lab. In short - if you like "B movie" horror from the 80's, but want to re-visit it in a less-cheesy and more modern way, this is that film. If you hate B-movies, hate the idea of secret nazi labs, etc... skip it. I think you'll be missing out but I wouldn't exactly hold it against you.

The Thing (1982) - My favorite film, so I put it on the list, so sue me. If you haven't seen it - you need to. Done. End of story. Goodday, sir.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil - Such a fun, hilarious take on the horror genre. Two hillbillies get 'attacked' by kids who think the hillbillies are the ones attacking them... it's absurd and lovable and hilarious and even my horror-hating mother in law couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole film.

Cabin in the Woods - you've probably heard of it. You should have, anyway. Easily some of the best horror to come out in a decade. Lots of meta / inside jokes for horror lovers wrapped in one of the best and most interesting stories to come out in forever. I could argue it may very well be the best horror flick ever made.

Action

Baby Driver - Likely will end up being looked back on as one of the best action films of the last 10 years. Great music, great acting, fun story. Must see IMHO.

Upgrade - Like Overlord I'm hesitant to put it on the list because it's pretty "standard" action as far as action films go. That being said - the premise is so fun and unique and enjoyable that I just had to. I was smiling through the entire film in pure delight at every little thing this movie did. Watch it with a friend you can laugh and yell "ohhhh shit!" with.

Logan - You said you hated superhero movies. I get that. I'm tired of them as well. However - this is the ONLY superhero movie that comes ANYWHERE close to being a masterpiece. It's not "perfect" but it's so close that I'm willing to forgive the flaws and see this as a damn fine entry into my "favorite films" list. For reference - no other superhero films come close. The rest are 100% popcorn hollywood garbage (maybe fun garbage, but garbage) while this one actually makes solid attempts at stupid things like "plot" "emotion" "character development" and other silly movie elements that make a movie good.

Snowpiercer - I didn't know whether to put this here or under sci fi. It's dystopian sci fi action... Takes place on a train barrelling around earth, carrying the last remnants of humanity. Absolutely fantastic film.

Drama

Swiss Army Man - Stars Daniel Radcliffe as a corpse. The plot... well... if harry potter were a corpse and all his magic involved using his dead body to help a castaway, this would be the resulting film. Super weird. Super fun. Watch it with someone you can laugh at how F*cking weird everything about this movie is. That being said - I thought it was really, really good for such an absurd plot.

Comedy

Game Night - I did not expect to like this movie. I watched it reluctantly on someone else's recommendation and now think it's one of the best comedies to come out in the last 10 years. If you've ever seen "The Game" from 1997 with Michael Douglas, this is very similar, but absolutely hilarious. I happen to really like Jason Bateman as an actor so that's icing on the cake for me.

Western

3:10 to Yuma - I'm not huge into Westerns but this one was fantastic. Starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe... I mean.. come on! Give it a watch for the acting alone (the story is also good though).

Historic War ? Is that a genre?

Master and Commander - Russell Crowe (again, so sue me). Takes place during the Napoleonic wars. Bit of a cat and mouse game on the high seas between two ships. Just a fantastic film shot beautifully with an incredible audio track - if you have good speakers, this is a great movie to use them on.

I could probably think of a dozen more but this is probably a good start.

I highly recommend reading Creativity, Inc. then watching all the Pixar films. Their process is incredible, and the storytelling is a superb example of tempering ideas in the fire for years.

The book gave me a great lens with which to watch the films.

Note: I'm probably also biased because most of my non-documentary watching is now done with two young children.

Midway looks intriguing and might tickle my WWII fascination.

Do you like mind F*cks and not mind reading subtitles (might find it dubbed idk)? I've got what you need:

Contratiempo - The Invisible Guest

Nueve Reinas - (Nine Queens) This movie has 22 awards.

El Secreto de Sus Ojos - (The Secret in Their Eyes) There's a 2015 Hollywood remake, has bad reviews. Make sure you watch the original. The original won one Oscar (Best Foreign Language Film of the Year) and another 55 awards.

Nothing like Hollywood. Other countries films are told in different ways, you might like the change.

If you want intelligent entertainment you might have to start looking elsewhere. I'll assume you've already watch most Hollywood movies released up to 2015.

It's time to move on to Japanese media. Japan movies and series are heavily based in philosophy and psychology. Most people dismissed them because the medium looks childish. But Anime was never meant for children.

A good place to start would be:

Ghost In The Shell
Full Metal Alchemist

Something I do whenever I want to find a new movie:

1. Go on IMDB and find a movie you like.
2. On the right side there's user generated lists. Open up to 10 tabs with the different lists that look appropriate.
3. Go through the lists and find movies that you think you'd be interested in.

That's the easiest way to find great films.

The same way that we're entrepreneurship junkies, there's movie junkies out there that curate the top films and rank them. If you find someone with similar taste, you can easily find dozens of new movies to watch.

I loved Interstellar and also enjoyed:

Contact (1997)
Moon (2009)
Ex Machina
Europa Report
Mars (TV, Netflix)
Source Code
Life (2017)

Others on top of my head:

Prisoners
Nightcrawler
Joker
Zodiac

If you're into science and like space and stuff I absolutely recommend:

Wonders of the Universe (BBC, Brian Cox)
Human Universe (BBC, Brian Cox)
Cosmos
How the Universe Works

Yes, I don't want to sound snob or salty but I did not really like the Joker movie.

I haven’t actually watched. I suppose it goes to show something if my chief motivation would be “snowflakes didn’t like it, so I should watch it”.
Television wise, I’m hoping Picard will be good. I haven’t liked anything Star Trek since Voyager and Nemesis.

As to warfare documentaries, I’d definitely recommend “The Girl who Forgave the Nazis”.

To quote a review on The Girl who Forgave the Nazis (TV Movie 2016) - IMDb:

"A documentary about holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor, who publicly - and very controversially - forgave all the Nazis. This documentary is very sad and moving and provides a lot of information about the concentration camps and the human experiments of twins by Dr. Josef Mengele, through the stories of Eva and three more holocaust survivors.

The film begins and ends with the trial of former Nazi Oskar Groning (who died last month) but it's not really the focus of the film. Seeing Eva hugging and kissing him during the trial is difficult and understandably, most of the holocaust survivors didn't take these actions kindly.

Very interesting documentary. It's very sad but gives a lot of information about the holocaust, through stories and archive footage."

It will surely move you, and stretch your mind. In times when I think I got it bad, or I should be mad about something, I watch movies about the holocaust. Very powerful medecine. I also refer to BOOK REVIEW - Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl.

Haha anime is a rabbit hole- lots of genres, ranging from fantasy-history, to the ‘slice of life’, to of course, NSFW.

Here’s one that stuck with me:

Violet Evergarden is a great anime series to learn on how to develop empathy, and even writing skills...from the POV of a former child soldier.

28649

Very stunning masterpiece. Not just the animation and soundtrack, but also how the main character, Violet, is tasked to write letters and other stuffs for clients...so she meets with dying mothers, depressed movie writers and even a princess to be married!

It has many hidden tips and principles on understanding people or writing from ground zero...I would recommend it as a must watch for writers.

I believe an Evergarden movie is coming out soon. It’s underlying theme shouldn’t be very different from the main series.

Other movies I have watched which were pretty good:
-Babe- yeah, the talking piglet one
28647

- I Am Mother - an Australian sci-fi film on how a droid raises a girl from baby to adulthood.
28648

It raises lots of questions on what motherhood truly is, and somehow mixes it up with the concept of ‘control over determining who is right or wrong’

-The Journey
28646
This is a local movie from my country, and it’s about how a traditional Chinese father works to accept his daughter’s upcoming marriage with a Westerner- and prepare a huge wedding for them.

Lots of family unity lessons here, and if you also love Malaysian cultural and scenic snapshots, this is for you.

EDIT: Don’t mind the Mandarin or dialects in the last show...I remember they have subtitles, and also smatterings of English here and there...

They Shall Not Grow Old was an interesting documentary that used advanced film restoration technology to colorize and restore old/lost WW1 footage. I saw it in theaters this year, probably one of the few films I actually went out to see these past few years.

One of the most inspiring movies for me is "Good Will Hunting" with Robin Williams and the young Matt Damon.

A guy who is a mathematic genius but lives into his fears and comfort zone, because he can't express hisself truly. I can associate it with entrepreneurship because it's the same way to do thing you are not used to or you are scared of. Currently zipping through the Thread of @IceCreamKid "The "Astonishing Secrets" and the same topics came up there.

I am a huge stand up fan. I love all the Louie CK, all the new Dave Chappelle, and any Bill Burr.

I think you'll like this movie. It's not English but has subtitles available. It's called 3 idiots. It is an adaptation of the novel "Five Point Someone". The movie became a hit all over India (which is rare) and also all over china (which is even rarer). It's a fun coming of age film which also shares the philosophy of why success in education does not translate to success in life.

Edit: Sorry I missed where you said recent or near recent film. It's an oldie but goldie.

Arrival is a great one that I’d recommend.

If you want to watch something weird - the original old boy in 2001 is one of my favorite movies. Beautiful and f*cked up. I know you said new, but I had to throw this in.

There’s also In Bruges and City of God.

City of God was great.

Cypher is one of my favourite movies - I think it has one of the best plots in a movie I've seen for a long time.

Cyrano de Bergerac is pretty good too (the old one).

I agree with you on Disney, Marvel, action movies with cars and gun chases. But... if you want to give action movies a try, I would totally recommend Baby Driver.

Thought I would hate it from the trailer. Friend had to drag me to the movie theatre, but damn its one of my favorite overall movies now. Will you learn anything? No. But it's a lot of fun with a good sound system.

As for human experience/ cerebral? I haven't seen anything good in this category recently. My go to for this stuff is Black Mirror.

Give me some Dumb & Dumber, Ace Ventura, Step Brothers, Superbad, Anchorman, etc.

Agree, comedy is so seriously needed :) That's why the first movie I mentioned here, was a comic one (albeit also with a strong human interest side):
I seldom go to movie theatres. So no advice here. But maybe as back up: watch The Intouchables - Wikipedia if you haven't seen it already. Enjoy!!! :)

By the way, I was referring to this one: The Intouchables (2011) - IMDb. Not to this one: The Untouchables (1987) - IMDb There might have been some misunderstanding there.

I seriously can't remember seeing any other movie that made me laugh sooo often and sooo hard, and that left me in so much tears, tears from laughing as well as tears from emotion. I was so completely and gladly messed up by that movie :) Just a rare combination of absolute perfect comedy and soul teaching.

I recommend with your book writing talent it may be time to start a movie script of your own... I mean that sincerely.

Imagine a young person growing up Slow Lane life on earth ...come up with the script, but thoughts like ...he/she gets to a whole new world in space? or somewhere ...where only heavy science, major progress and your mode of thinking is the accepted norm. The real life traveler is hell bent on finding another way ...where they escape the slow lane life and go out to start it in another state, country, planet or galaxy "or" arrives at a place where your perfect world already exists, etc, etc. either way... you get the point.

A hybrid of your books into a movie?

Agree with previous mentions of Ex-Machina and Upgrade both good movies involving artificial intelligence. With the later having a fair amount of action.

Another recent movie/documentary type that I enjoyed was Free Solo - about a guy that climbs without a safety rope.

I'm probably biased as a F1 race fan as would recommend movie Rush - based on true events people in F1 past.

Another one I wouldn't have recommended off the top of my head, just looking through some previous sci-fi lists is Passengers. Definately had/has me thinking when come across the movie years after watching it.

I use a site called movielens to get recommendations. You enter ratings for movies you've watched and it takes those ratings and gives a suggested rating for you on other movies. As well as recommending movies. I've found some enjoyable movies I wouldn't have considered based on it's recommendations.

Anyone ever try watching Memento backwards in the proper order?

Usually I’m just putting on movies for background sound when I’m doing work but Blackkklansman caught my attention recently and I thought it was pretty good. There’s some Spike Lee politics in places but it’s the only movie I can think of recommending from the past few months.

Moon sounds interesting, hopefully notas interesting as the premise for “Passengers” and then ending up being one of the worst movies I’ve ever watched lol

I highly recommend for anyone who saw "Passengers" to check out this video (spoiler warning - this video assumes you've seen the movie...):

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gksxu-yeWcU

It shows how the movie could have been made FAR better with some re-arranging of the plot points. I honestly have to agree with them. I think if the filmmakers had gone with this version a lot more people would have sung its praises.
