Ok we've all seen the local TV ads...
"Come down to Bob Smith Ford! Where we'all treat you like family!" Awkward guy in a suit 2 sizes too big hugs his dog and winks st the camera.
"Call Bob Smith windows! And don't forget, when you come to the show room, bring the cookies!" <- actual ad from my area
In local businesses we see so many branded businesses with the owner being the brand. Car dealerships are the #1 offender of this. But we also see HVAC, Roofing, Home Cleaning, Law Offices, Garage Door Repair, Windows and Doors, etc all being represented by the personal brand. They usually have cheese gimicks that seem to have been going on for decades. The window guy in my city has been asking for cookies for over 10 years.
So, what gives? Maybe it's a generational thing, but for me personally, every time I see a guy screaming at me on TV in his ill fitting suit about how his car dealership is the best, I make a point to avoid his dealership.
Are business owners narcissistic? Does being the personal brand for your local business actually help? Or do people just think they're more important than they are?
I understand they're going for the idea of "trust" with their consumer, but all I see is outdated and hokey sales techniques.
