I was going to make a post about this a little while ago when I first encountered the following quote, but I didn't get around to it until I was reading the discussion in this thread and thought it was appropriate. I'm starting a new thread because I didn't wanna hijack the other one any more.
Anyway, I was reading some forums about a car that my dad was looking at, and one of the members was posting his experience. He said something that I agreed with, and I wanted to get your thoughts on it. Basically, he was saying that the point of negotiating is to create a FAIR deal, not to pinch every penny out of the other party. It sounds very basic and elementary, but I didn't really realize that until now.
Of course, when I told my dad about it, he lashed out at me and told me how stupid it was. He's obviously not that type. We were at a car dealership negotiating, and I whispered it to him as he was contemplating the offer he got and the salesman was talking to his manager. He said, "They know how low they can go. It's not my responsibility to pay their salaries. I have my own family to worry about." While I understand what he's saying, I can't necessarily say that I agree. My feeling is that if the deal has reached a point that I am satisfied with and that makes sense, then I've reached a fair price and should settle. I obviously haven't had to deal with what he has, but as of now, that's my belief.
Anybody have any thoughts?
