I'm going to dump some notes on my landing page experiments on this thread, hopefully they will be useful to someone.
My goal was to get a response from the internet, using paid ads and a minimal amount of effort. I started with "finance" because I've had several finance-related project ideas kicking around for years. I used Bing ads because they are cheaper than Google and I figure a lot of my expected target audience (older guys watching their stocks) would be using IE and desktops.
I made two versions of my landing page:
I made two ads (they are the reverse order, so the top ad goes to the second page):
I set the ad to run Friday during US stock hours, men only. Here are the results:
Here is more detail:
My mailing list got 3 signups, so a little under 5% of the people who clicked the ad signed up. Two of them signed up from the second ad ("Confused"), one from the first. Doing a quick check reveals that 1.6 users went for the "confused" ad for every one "learn" click. Actionable information, I'll probably try ads for fear, etc and see if response increases. I also now know I can expect to pay $4 per email.
