Everyone who spent some time getting into productivity tools like Notion or Obsidian will most likely at some point come across the terms PKM which stands for personal knowledge management, Second Brain, GTD (Getting Things Done) and others.
While trying to get the most out of these tools - which are both fantastic tools btw - I quickly fell down a rabbit hole of productivity topics. This was really a lot of fun. And it felt productive. After all I read about and watched videos on productivity, right?
Wrong.
While I spent many hours thinking and reading about how to be productive, or how to best work in these tools, I spent very little time actually working on what I wanted to work in them.
But of course I didn't see it like that at that point. Surely, there must be something wrong with my productivity system. Let's look at habit trackers and task managers. I tried a lot of those.
And I'm not alone with this. Just go to YouTube and look up common productivity terms. Over the last few years there seems to have emerged a whole new market of productivity tools and methods.
At some point in our Fastlane journey most of us will probably start to use some kind of productivity system. Otherwise handling a whole project can become really difficult really fast. As someone who read a lot about action faking on here and was quick to see it when others did it, it took me way too long to realize that I was action faking being productive. You might find yourself in a similar situation when you start to work on a project.
Learning about productivity systems and tools is great, when you use the learned to take action. But like the person who wrote this article states:
Or this great article by Todoist - which is a fantastic tool, when used as intended:

If you check out the ultra-productive people in the world, do they attribute all their success to their second brains? Does Elon Musk talk about his second brain? Jeff Bezos? Warren Buffett? Alex Hormozi?
I haven’t seen anything about it.
So why is there so much hype about second brains, PKM, and all that kind of stuff when you do not hear that kind of talk among those who are objectively speaking the most productive? Is it a scam or is it a secret that many don’t know or people assume that they know?
Or this great article by Todoist - which is a fantastic tool, when used as intended:
Hi, my name is Belle and I’m addicted to productivity.
I don’t mean the real kind of productivity where I actually move my important projects forward. No, I’m talking about productivity content - the countless articles, videos, infographics, e-books, real books, whitepapers, and email courses out there that I can’t seem to get enough of.
And:
The problem with this idea of “productivity porn” taking up all our time is that nobody seems to have a solution for how to avoid it. If you enjoy watching videos and reading articles about productivity methods, trying new tools, and planning how to get more work done, you’re probably in the same situation I am. You want to accomplish more, but you inevitably procrastinate on the actual work in favor of looking for new hacks, systems, and apps to solve all your problems.
As James Bedell has noticed, productivity porn isn’t the answer to actually being more productive:
"The most productive people I know don’t read these books, they don’t watch these videos, they don’t try a new app every month. They are far too busy getting things done to read Getting Things Done."
