I'm speaking for myself and my group of friends. I used to play alot of pickup ball and around age 37ish was when I noticed I couldn't hang with high school kids on the court. What I also noticed was that my recovery time increased. I couldn't play 2-3 nights in a row anymore. But I still played softball in 2 leagues also on other nights. Honestly, I noticed very little decline in speed until around 45ish. Then it felt like it fell off a cliff. Then some nights my knees would hurt. My back would be sore on one side. All this time I'm getting massages, chiro adjustments and I even had a personal trainer. Are those issues being caused mainly by age? Or do most have them because of how they "mistreated" their bodies and ignored mobility for so long?
I tell it over and over. Both my grandmothers would put most of "fit" people I know to shame when it comes to mobility. One of them passed in her 90s. She could squat like nothing and could stay in a squat position for a decent amount of time. The majority of people can't hold a resting squat for more than 10 min. Both of them actively avoided modern stuff like chairs, sofas, etc...
People spend a lot of time on stretching and muscle tightness because they have neglected it for so long. I attribute it more to the treatment of their body catching up, rather than age. Sure, age impacts our bodies. I do believe it has much less to do with age itself, than how we treat them.
For example, of the primal movement patterns, which do most practice regularly?
Take cycling. Are we built to ride bicycles? I don't know if there are research and articles on that. But I will say no.
I agree with @PureA in a way. Age takes more blame than it should.
I'd love to hear @SteveO's and @MJ DeMarco's take on this as they were both playing with me during this time. How did you guys feel day to day after the games?
Looking back, what I think I did was too many sports until 45, and then after that too little sports. The lack of running, stopping, jumping probably reduced my mobility. In hindsight, my trainer who was much younger than me, probably pushed me too hard on intensity. I think it's something that younger trainers just don't understand because they are young.
Why do they make such a big deal of Tom Brady being 45? I mean a 50 year old can still throw a football right? Why do QBs like Peyton Manning fall off a cliff in performance. I used to wonder why 35 in the NBA was considered old when I was 25. But now that I'm 50, I understand it alot better. Age does get to you. Do you think Kobe wanted to retire? Most guys say, my body just couldn't take it anymore. You can do what you can to slow it down, but eventually your muscles are just not the same. Also, you joints lose its lubricant and cushion. There's nothing you can do about it. Maybe eat more fish oil and glucosamine. Don't get me wrong, I still feel like I'm in very good shape. I'd go up against anyone my age in sports, but no way I'm trying to play people half my age anymore. Ok, maybe in pickleball!
