On a recent flight, I decided to re-read some old documents and reviewed the Boron Letters by Gary Halbert. One thought in particular that caught my attention was:
The first thing I want to say is that a fat, sloppy or skinny and weak body tends to broadcast to the world that the owner of that body is lacking self-respect. The second thing is that tough animals have a tendency to prey on weak or helpless animals.
Here is something to remember: DEFENSIVE BEHAVIOR INVITES AGGRESSIVE ACTION!
What that means is that in life in general (and in prison in particular) there is very little sympathy for a weakling.
In today’s world, many people default to using their weaknesses to elicit help from others by playing the victim card and saying “Poor me, look how incapacitated I am.”
I’m also guilty of this myself. I sometimes tend to focus on my weaknesses instead of focusing on how to fix them or use them as my strengths.
From the perspective of self-respect, there’s nothing worse you can do to yourself than use your weaknesses to elicit compassion. In the best case, maybe you’ll get somehumiliating help. In the worst case, you’ll invite aggression. Either way, you’re not solving the underlying issue.
John Carlton, Gary’s friend, wrote in one of his PDFs (another document I re-read during that flight):
Veteran marketers and copywriters who get stuff done know, by heart, the old Zen maxim that there is no "trying" in reality.
You're either eating a sandwich, or not eating it.
To even think you're "trying" to eat it is absurd to anyone who understands how things get done.
The common delusions that hold back civilians (non-entrepreneurs) include phrases like "I can't do that" (translation: I WON'T do that) and "I don't have time for that" (translation: I won't MAKE time for that)... all of which absolve the speaker of responsibility for action, as if some third party were interfering with their lives.
You crave success; you gotta get over your bad self...
… and take on the writing and management of your life's script.
Think of it as a movie -- you may not have total control over everything, but you have a lot MORE control than you naturally believe you have.
Write your script the way you want, and then go for it.
I find this an excellent reminder for pursuing excellence in life.
Get over your bad self. Take on the responsibilities needed to get where you want to go. Being weak doesn’t get you anywhere except to self-pity land.
