Interesting thread. I've been in sales 20+ years, in fact it's all I've ever done. I've always been a top producer and in more than a few roles I've had the company ended up changing the pay structure always resulting in screwing the people who were actually producing the income. I remember when Dell first started up here in Texas, guys were working bell to bell and during the peak season you would routinely see new BMW's show up in the parking lot from even just a month's paycheck. Now the average rep there makes $48K PER YEAR.
My last "job" I helped start up the company (no ownership though), became top producer in the country for our product, trained other agents to be top producers, and when it came time to discuss compensation beyond me just having a "job" there, the owner was too scared to do anything but promised me the world if I just gave him enough "time". Needless to say I left and started my own company doing the same thing, and everyone there eventually got commissions slashed. Last I checked in fact no one from the original group is there and the owner still can't find any peace of mind because he's so influenced by his own fear and married to his business.
I guess my point is, you can make a boat load in sales working for a company, but it's likely they'll catch on. I think sales is the best way(if you're good at it) to earn enough capital to get yourself to the fastlane. And if you do in fact get to the fastlane, treat your top producers like gold so they'll never want to leave you, especially if their results are paying your handsome salary. It'll be worth it.
