Hello.

Here are some of my favorite sayings that I've shared with my kids over the years (who now all have Masters degrees from top schools and huge college debt to prove it). What are your favorites?
  • Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.
  • When a finger points to the moon, an imbecile looks at the finger.
  • There's never time to do it Right, but there's always time to do it over!
  • There are none so deaf than those who will not hear.
  • Doubt means don't do it until you know what to do. (Oprah)
  • First understand before trying to be understood.
  • Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
  • When people SHOW you who they are the first time, believe them!
  • Proper preparation prevents poor performance. (the '5 P' rule)
  • You have to learn how to follow before you can lead.
  • It is one thing to be thought of as a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
  • All that glitters ain't gold.
  • If you're not something to somebody, then you're nothing to everybody.
  • If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.
  • Don't always go by what you see; go by what you know.
  • Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing.
  • Some folks don't believe lard is greasy.
  • You can't tell a book by its cover.
  • Just because someone said it, don't make it true.
  • Look before you leap.
  • Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
  • Dead fish go with the flow (I heard this a day and a half ago - Sarah Palin)
  • What they been smokin? (I really like this one -> whatever it was, I hope it was good! :smxF:)
...and there are so many more sayings said by wise people...and my parents, who I as a silly teenager thought they knew nothing; then I turned out to sound almost just like my mother to my kids in this respect (a scary thought, but it worked - of course, she can now say, 'I told you so...") -- go figure. :)

It's nice to live by these, but because we are human, at least most of us are, sometimes we falter and fall. Then, all we can do is get up, dust ourselves off, and try again (an take our foot out of our mouth).

I've told some of these sayings to students I've tutored and other young people. I just hope they heard me. Sometimes, I hope I've heard me. :)

Have fun with this!

P.S. I've never shared these in a public setting, but I'm so impressed with this new-found forum which I am truly enjoying, that I thought this was a fitting place to share them. I do hope others especially young folk will benefit from these before sayings die off in future generations as 'old stuff that has no relevance in today's world.' :)

Here's another two -

  • Better safe than sorry
  • Err on the side of caution
Although I may be alone here, :smxB: I will continue to add to this thread just in the chance that at least 1 person may benefit. Plus, it allows me to keep track of the ones I hear in the future or the ones I remember from the past.

ENJOY!

There's another similar thread, with a lot more Motivational Quotes, which may get repeated here. But for more general "life advice", one of my most oft repeated "sayings" is:

"Don't complain about what you permit."

and

"Don't try to teach a pig to sing. It frustrates you and irritates the pig."

lmao I love the finger pointing to the moon one.

Here are a couple I got about living today and not in the past:

Don't let the past steal your present.

You can clutch the past so tightly to your chest that it leaves your arms too full to embrace the present.

Living the past is a dull and lonely business; looking back strains the neck muscles, causing you to bump into people not going your way.

The past is a guidepost, not a hitching post.

We crucify ourselves between two thieves: regret for yesterday and fear of tomorrow.

Other sayings:

Don't look where you fall, but where you slipped.

Most of the shadows of this life are caused by our standing in our own sunshine.

Nature gave men two ends - one to sit on and one to think with. Ever since then man's success or failure has been dependent on the one he used most.

Giving up doesn't always mean you are weak. Sometimes it means that you are strong enough to let go.

Promise only what you can deliver. Then deliver more than you promise.

Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.

The biggest problem in the world could have been solved when it was small.

It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.

Beware of a man of one book.

Dig the well before you are thirsty.

Be wary of the man who urges an action in which he himself incurs no risk.

Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.

Enjoy all.

When you reach a certain level of success, this becomes blatantly true and is something to live by:

"Don't be afraid of enemies who attack you; be afraid of the friends who flatter you."

As a little boy, I'd hear my father offer these nuggets of wisdom as he moved through the house. The older I get, the more resonant these homespun aphorisms become. Here goes:

"Them that got shall git, them that ain't got shall not git s--t and what little they have shall be taken away."

"One monkey don't stop no show."

"Bulls--t ain't nothin' but chewed up grass."

"The man on the bottom always has to work the hardest."

"A hard head makes a soft a$$."

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating."

Just thought of a couple of words of wisdom handed to me from my grandfather. No offense to the ladies meant, but great words of wisdom for a young man.

" The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but requires twice the maintenance"

"Fat girls need lovin too"

"Church girls do it just as much as non church girls"
