I read the thread on why having a "slowlane" job is not always a bad idea, one being that you can work on your fastlane goals while still collecting a paycheck. This is basically where I am, 8 years into a corporate job in the finance industry that pays the bills but is unfulfilling. Like some others, the job does afford me considerable downtime to potentially work on fastlane projects.
In terms of finances, I would like to think I'm very well prepared to leave my current employer if needed. I've figured out all my monthly living expenses and have worked out that I could be completely unemployed for 10 months and that would only eat up 1/3 of my liquid savings (retirement and equity in my home would not be touched). So obviously if push came to shove I could technically be unemployed for 30 months before my savings is gone but obviously I don't want to do that, so 10 months is about timeframe I'm looking at.
My dilemma is this, I don't know if I should continue working and put that capital towards a startup or take the leap and leave my job. While my job affords me with a decent amount of downtime and decent pay, it is extremely draining mentally. I find it very hard to work my slowlane job and yet have enough energy to devote to the creativity I feel is needed to come up with a fastlane idea.
I'm struggling between leaving my job and freeing up myself to be more creative but eating into my savings vs staying on to keep the cash flow faucet going but struggling mentally to think outside the box. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
