Does it annoy anyone else that so many things are arbitrary? Why is it so significant to become a millionaire? It's only marginally better than $985,000 and yet we treat it like it's a completely different amount of money.
Why do we celebrate completed marathons of 26.2 miles, but not 20-mile runs? Who decided that turning 50 was more monumental than turning 47? What exactly is wrong with a 23-minute workout? The world is obsessed with clean, arbitrary numbers, but they are no more significant than the surrounding ones. I mean, one million and one dollars is objectively better and more significant than one million dollars, but nobody cares about that extra dollar unless it's the one that takes you to seven digits.
I understand clean numbers give simple, memorable, and familiar reference points. And, no, I don't set meetings at 2:49 PM just to prove a point. But when we apply this concept across a dynamic life, we may only improve 50% when we could have improved 69% simply by being open to fractionated progress.
Instead of joining the world in valuing arbitrary milestones, it's better to value all amounts of progress. An example: I have a pull-up bar in an open doorway in my home. I will randomly do pull-ups when I pass by. That's not a workout. It's not a milestone. But it's a micro dose of exercise, and that's a lot better than nothing! A small 2022 study found strength increases of 10% when participants did only three seconds of strength training per day for a month.33Three seconds.
When you value progress over milestones and clean numbers, you'll stop getting stuck and discouraged as often in your journey. It's fine to have something concrete to aim for, but it's not okay if that milestone makes you devalue the journey and smaller amounts of progress you make before you get to that magic number.
