The greatest benefit of mentorship...
And I'm not talking about being mentored...finding a mentor is REALLY EASY...if you understand the rules. We should all know this stuff by now...if not, learn the rules and catch up.
I've been mentored, I now mentor others helping them learn the things I wish I learned sooner...while still being mentored by others.
Want to cut months off of your learning curve?
For one of my email lists, I have a great marketing source and I'm building a list as fast as I want....the only restraint is how much I can spend that day.
With that territory, comes obstacles to push through. At first, I loved getting messages from my followers who replied back to me with questions. Then more people started emailing back.
In one instance, I spent half an hour typing up a reply to help someone...his response was "Sweet dude...".
I love helping people, but that instance was a waste of time because he never took action.
In fact, 99% of the people I've spent my time helping...I wasted my time because they never took action on it.
Can you guess how to stand out yet?
So I needed help...
My "mentor" has a following in the tens of thousands (larger than mine is now), and hes been through this exact phase.
I use the word mentor loosely because he is more of a friend than a mentor. We have been in a mastermind group for almost 2 years now. I used the word mentor because he has experience in one particular area that I don't.
A question that would take me months to find the answer to....was answered 5 seconds after he saw my message on skype.
The answers are at my fingertips.
Remember that person I spent 30 minutes typing up a reply to, and did nothing? And how I won't help him again because I felt my time was wasted?
Would this person help me again if I didn't act on his advice?
No.
There was someone I helped for free 18 months ago. He took action and thanked me. I gave him a little bit more advice...he took more action.
He took bigger action.
FINALLY - somebody who I give advice to who ACTUALLY IS LISTENING TO IT.
These 1% of people stand out from the rest.
It's those 1% of people that who will still stick around this game long enough to mentor other people, and the cycle continues.
18 months later, his mindset is completely reprogrammed for success, and he has made money with multiple businesses....some days he makes more money than me.
All because he acted on this advice.
And worst of all, don't ever question the advice if it is a LEGIT mentor who knows what they are talking about. I made that mistake multiple times and lost mentors because of it.
I thought I knew something, and was too busy proving myself to be right, than to listen.
Looking back, I was wrong...so just listen without question (As long as they are someone who has actually done what you want to do.).
When I help people who reply to me via my email list, I now:
1- Give smaller advice up front and not use my valuable time, but still helps them.
2- If they act on it, I'll commit a little more time
3- If they are the type of person who I know won't give up, and are committed to the long run...I help them more, and they in turn grow quicker.
My benefit from it? I get new perspectives into my audience, and how they need help...and I use those lessons for content on my youtube videos, blog posts, and in my book.
Receive AND Give AND Take Action- that's what it's all about.
How can you benefit the person who can help you? Think outside the box.
When was the last time you GAVE?
I also challenge you to mentor somebody else, and have experience as the mentor. And if you're new at business...don't mentor in business. It can be at the gym, in guitar, or whatever you know how to do. When you understand things from helping others...you will get new insights on being helped too.
Final note - Don't try to latch on to mentors. In most instances, they appear in your life to get you to a certain level, but no further..but when you are ready...the next one will appear.
