The Mentor

How important do you think a mentor is to success in the endeavour of entrepreneurship? I would have thought a good mentor who has done what you want to do is well worth having, maybe even worth giving up equity in the business.

How do you find someone like this who is willing to mentor you? Since these people having already done it I imagine their fees would be pretty unaffordable to most start-ups. Or is that often the role that a venture capitalist takes? It would be amazing to work with a start-up incubator like Y combinator where you get this guidance, but for those who are not in this situation what should you do?

Or do most entrepreneurs just go it alone and learn what they can from books, podcasts and trial and error?
