Raising funds is more than a process, it is a lifestyle! haha. There was a documentary on a startup that scanned regular mail and the CEO was courting investors more than half his time, this is much more representative of startups.
I disagree w/ the statements that a great product doesn't need to be pushed for investors, IMHO, most products/services were actively hawked to investors, probably the vast majority of online businesses. Later stage proven stuff may not need to be, but startups will rarely have people flocking to them. The key is getting some quick n dirty version up and running to establish some track record.
#1 reason investors invest, because other peers did invest. Most angels work in groups and pass deals to each other, spreading out their risk. Get out and network. Go where successful people are. Once you meet one, make sure you tap them for their network.
As far as wanting to keep your equity not having a founding partner, that is GREEDY. Bulls make money, bears make money, pigs get slaughtered. You are in no position as a new first time founder to take this approach.
Steve Jobs had a partner
Bill Gates had a partner
Zuckerberg had partners(but screwed em over. haha)
they are all billionaires. What part of HALF the multi-billions don't you like????
Get your first success under your belt, then you can get all the money you want for yourself in your 2nd venture. Or fund it yourself, you will then be able to outsource everything/hire anyone and keep equity for yourself.
Time is wasting. Do you think there aren't other people working on nearly EXACTLY same idea you are RIGHT NOW? I guarantee there are. The clock is ticking. There were dozens of youtubes coming out at the same time, dozens of any version of an online business. The key to success was getting them up and running and be first to get big investments and grab marketshare getting exposure.
Suck it up, get a technical partner and get the hell going building out your product. Because your competitors are doing that right now. Good luck!
Pink Floyd Time Lyrics
Songwriters: WILLIAMS, DENIECE / WHITE, MAURICE
Ticking away the moments
That make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours
In an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground
In your home town
Waiting for someone or something
To show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then the one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
(Solo)
And you run and you run
To catch up with the sun
But it's sinking
Racing around
To come up behind you again
The sun is the same
In a relative way
But you're older
Shorter of breath
And one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation
Is the English way
The time is gone
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say
Home
Home again
I like to be here
When I can
When I come home
Cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones
Beside the fire
Far away
Across the field
Tolling on the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spell...
