Disclaimer: This post might be long. I've tried to summarise 18 years of events into a readable, written account. Moreover, I wish to make it abundantly clear that I understand ideas are useless without execution. Finally, this is my objective opinion. Even though it's my Dad's brainchild-- I won't blow smoke up his a$$.
Growing up, I knew my Dad was a bit of a "mad scientist". However, it's only within the last three or so years that I've learned the extent of his entrepreneurial journey.
From roundtable meetings with big investors, to presenting an invention (the one which is the focus of this post) to a highly known figure in my country, my Dad was truly in the trenches.
There's one invention which truly stuck out, and he's been lugging it around from home to home for the last 18 years. Yes, you heard that right. 18 F*cking years!
He went through a phase in life where he truly, truly harnessed the power of his mind. One night, he awoke and gasped- the whole concept "flashed" into his mind. To this day, we believe his mind successfully made contact with a superior intelligence.
Sadly, due to a lack of perseverance (a CRUCIAL element of entrepreneurship), he stopped pursuing this idea. He ended up drifting for 18 years, and this goldmine has been rotting in the attic of three homes since.
Objectively speaking, this idea and prototype is the absolute best I've personally come across. Even after 18 years, it's still the first of its type, and it's related to the sports industry. I've even used it with great success and had a blast!
He got himself a patent almost a lifetime ago, but obviously-- it expired.
In the last year or so, I've attempted to awaken his inner genius, and reignite his flame to pursue this further.
It's a "big ticket" item, and I don't think it'll be cheap to mass produce. As for the market-mind, I believe athletes and those with "F*ck you" money would LOVE IT. In saying that-- we can't do it ourselves. It's almost necessary to get a bigger fish on board. And considering how special it is, I quite honestly don't think it'll be hard. The high profile figure I spoke of earlier offered to ship it overseas to a manufacturer for inspection; my Dad refused due to the fact he didn't want the Chinese knocking it off.
Almost two decades later, enter yours truly. After a year of trying to reignite his spark and after countless sleepless nights of visualising business ideas, my mind returns to the blueprint he laid out.
Yesterday, I made the definite decision-- I'm hiring a van and transporting it to his house (he lives separately these days). I told him to write out some notes, I'll help him refine it and we'll present it to a patent attorney. Enough of this- I'm hopping on board and bringing this thing to the world.
I'll pay for the patent and act as his "secretary"; he despises paperwork. I'm confident the patent will pass, as it did 18 years ago. We both do monthly market checks and nothing like it has been done-- although a few products have got dangerously close.
Obviously, this isn't the type of product we can mass produce at home. First and foremost, we'll need money. Secondly, we'll need somebody to supply that money while having no sales, just a vision and a workable prototype.
Considering I've never dealt with a product of this nature, and due to the fact I'm still an infant in this world, where the hell do we go after getting a patent? Is it even possible to license the patent to a larger fish for a royalty check?
For now, I'm focused on actually delivering it to my father's house. He hasn't seen it in six years. But I'd really love to get some feedback to have some sort of actionable game-plan going forward.
Thank you for your time,
TWG
