I'm going to be launching a small business within the next 2 months. It involves buying products wholesale and repackaging them into my own brand product. Customers will be buying the brand as well as the product so being hands-on in the packaging and shipping step is necessary at this stage.
Ideally, after a few months of trading, I'd like to be creating my products in large batches, placing them in a fulfilment centre then shipping them out when orders occur. (This won't be amazon FBA btw. I'm aware of the risks regarding them). I'd also like to sell my products B2B to large retailers or other small businesses.
There are a few issues that I've been thinking could arise with this though:
No. 1 is that you may not know when you'll get a significant number of orders so you could sell out.
No. 2 is that my items are perishable. It'll vary so I can't be specific but let's just say they're best sold within 12-months of packaging.
I'm aware that once brands grow, this production step can be outsourced to manufacturers but I'm wondering what brands do before they reach that stage. I don't want to be dreaming up an amazing business that cannot function at all without someone being there 24/7.
Has anyone been through this before? Any advice is helpful!
