Hi everyone, I'm John from Farnborough, UK (just west of London for non-UK people). I've got a wife and three kids, and generally live a nice life.
I've been a Finance analyst/manager for big corporates for about 16 years, the last three as a freelancer. I'm good at what I do and make the equivalent of $2k to $3k per week. I'm on the track to be Finance Director/CFO by the end of my career, but that's just not what I want.
Reading TMF (along with a few other things) finally opened my eyes to the fact that I'm never going to get the freedom I want from a Slowlane job, so I'm switching lanes.
A few years ago, I did an MBA by Distance Learning. It was great, I loved spending time with intelligent, ambitious people from different backgrounds with different perspectives. I loved learning new things.
What I didn't love was that it came at the expense of time with my family. I couldn't afford to stop working, so studying had to happen in the evenings and on weekends.
I want the financial freedom that means I never have to make that trade-off again.
The current plan is to develop my small side business into something massive and disruptive, and eventually completely divorced from my time. I've got a target market of 1.8m and growing in the UK I can tap into, that's currently not well-served. I have three exit strategies in mind.
I'm here for a few things in particular:
1. To stay motivated. I need to be constantly reminded of what I'm working towards, and that it's achievable.
2. Specific, practical, actionable advice; things like how to use AdWords (thanks @Andy Black ), marketing, and so on.
3. To find someone, a peer or a mentor, who will listen to me ramble on about my ideas, and help me distill then into a plan with clear next steps, and help me hold myself accountable for actually doing them.
4. To help other forum members with my expertise where I can.
Thanks for reading, I look forward to interacting with you over the next few years.
