Ladies and Gentlemen, today I address you with a heavy heart.
Last week, after more than a year of morning discussions with one of my incubator clients, he simply disappeared. This was TOTALLY unlike him… I was worried that he had contracted COVID, had a car accident, or any number of things were rolling through my head. I was worried for his wellbeing.
After about a week of radio silence, I logged into facebook to see if there had been something, anything said about my client and friend. There was some buzz on his news feed about him doing something bad, but no details.
Upon further research, I found a New York Times article about him… It wasn’t good.
Evidently, even though he has two young children, a wife, a successful business, and massive prospects for the AI and blockchain venture we were working on in the incubator… Hyrum was arrested, by federal authorities, for distributing opioid drugs on the dark web and planning a violent attack, with a co-conspirator, on a competitive pharmacy.
I was absolutely SHOCKED. Those of you that have met him in the past probably know him as the quiet, mild-mannered family man. A super nice guy. Unfortunately for his family, he thought he was Walter White; and because of this, he will likely spend the remainder of his life in prison.
My personal feelings are so mixed on this. He had me fooled. I am angry that I feel like a poor judge of character. I feel like I somehow have egg on my face. At the same time, I am saddened at the loss of a high potential incubator client and friend. Quite frankly, this has shaken me up quite a bit.
I debated back and forth about bringing this to everyone’s attention, especially out of respect for his family, and I guess the part of Hyrum that I got to know, but there is a massive lesson to be learned here. This is NOT here for your entertainment.
If it makes one more person on the forum think twice before heading down a road like this, it will be worth it. There is too much legitimate business available in the world to go the illegitimate route. Life and freedom are fragile enough as it is.
I, for the life of me, don’t understand how he thought any of this could be sustainable long term. How this house of cards wouldn’t come crashing down around him. If you play with fire long enough, you are going to get burned.
My sincere hope and prayer is that Hyrum was somehow caught up in it as it grew out of control. That others had leverage on him or some such thing, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
I ALWAYS talk about building things on solid foundations. Things that stand the test of time. Even if it is harder in the beginning, it is worth it when the going gets tough, you have the opportunity to stand taller than the competition. I like businesses with a level of permanence. Working for my last name, not my first. Something my future children would be proud to be a part of. Amassing net worth by never killing the golden geese.
Unfortunately, Hyrum risked the ultimate golden goose. His freedom.
Please, keep Hyrum's family in your thoughts and prayers.
