In theory this works great. I still think you have to account for the variable of risk though. If Hak can get into a low risk biz for $7k and has a high probability that it will work then great--as we all know, it's easy to get into a business or real estate, it's a lot harder to get out of it (without losing money or your sanity or both) if it doesn't work. If Hak is already operating at the red line financially, I would say invest in a business where there is low, low risk or if they feel they can comfortably lose $7k trying out something--without being on the hook for more down the road...they can't play aggressively right now--there's too much to lose. They don't have the money to ride a learning curve or the time to dedicate to growing a biz. I know that isn't sexy or fastlane--but I think there is a time to play to win and a time to play to not lose.

The type of business I suggested he use the savings to get would be very low risk- passive, steady business at a 1-2x multiple. This is about as non aggressive/low variance as you can get.
