I'm a new web dev, just finished up my first two websites yesterday. They were just small 2-3 page HTML/CSS websites for small businesses, and I used a theme to save some time. I did it for free, although looking back I could have charged a couple hundred each. I made it a point to ask the owners what all of their major problems were as a business, and then used a website as a tool to solve as many of those problems as I could, and I think I did a good job. Hopefully it will lead to some referrals, but at the very least they are good portfolio pieces.
Now that I'm looking to network and start charging money for my services, I have to ask, what makes me valuable? In the era of $20 wordpress templates, cheap web designers on Upwork, and well-known website builders like Squarspace, what allows me to charge hundreds and (hopefully sooner rather than later) thousands of dollars for websites? What value am I providing that is worth that? Obviously my #1 goal is to SOLVE PROBLEMS, not build websites, but are there still major problems that require $5,000 websites rather than a $20 wordpress template and a few hours of work?
I just feel that this is a question I really need to answer for myself before I am confident enough to charge a premium for my websites.
