I have been lurking and sucking in value for a little while, i think it's time for me to give back. This post was written based on my own experience in life and i have achieved some success by using the realization below.
Have you gotten excited over a new goal that you would like to achieve, you visualize the success and you felt that it can be done and it will happen for you. It felt like it was guaranteed. Then with that enthusiasm and excitement, you start telling the goals to the people around you. Pretty soon, the feeling runs out and you felt like quitting. What happen?
Have it happen to you before?
What happened is that you probably belong to the group of people that uses emotion as a fuel for action. Success requires many actions to be taken, mostly the same kind/type of action on a consistent basis for a long period of time. When you are filled with enthusiasm and excitement, it is the rush of the new possibilities in your life that gives what I called the emotional fuel/motivation to take action.
But, by telling people around you and acting as if it had happened.
You lose out on this one thing called dissatisfaction that would work for you. When you announced to the world that you have “arrived”. You have accumulated this one thing called emotional satisfaction that will now work against you. The brain is not able to differentiate between reality and imagination due to the power of visualization. Your brain is tricked to think that your goal is more or less achieved and releases feel good feelings to congratulate you for your “imminent” success.
But the truth is there are a billion actions not yet taken. So what happen?
You spent the emotional fuel faster than you could recharge it, and soon you find yourself out of motivation. And for the untrained success go-getter, as you rely on this emotional fuel for action, you soon find yourself quitting as the fuel depletes.
There is something I want to share with these group of people that uses emotional fuel for action, for I, myself is one of them. One thing I learned about overcoming this issue is by focusing on being dissatisfied with my environment, 24/7 commitment, not telling a soul about what I am doing (minimize feel good feeling) and telling myself, it is by doing the process (paying the price) that I will have what I want and it’s worth going through the process and just do it.
Additional note about commitment. Understand that the feeling for doing something will fade probably about 1-3 week. Despite best effort to preserve it as long as possible. It will fade away completely or even starts to generate negative feelings. So does it mean that once the feelings fade, that’s the end game for you?
The answer is NO.
Because when the feeling fade, it’s time to show you commitment.
Commitment is actually, staying loyal to what you said you were going to do long after the mood you said it has left you. (one of MJ's facebook quote picture)
The lack of the mood is actually a test to see how much you are willing to go for your goal. It is a way for nature to test, if you are worthy of the rich reward it will shower upon you when you provide enough value or persist long enough to succeed on what you want to do or become.
I know there are gurus that said you should declare your goals and whatever.
But think for yourself, if it’s not working for you, then listen to Albert Einstein and stop being insane by doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.
Instead of going against your nature, study it and adopt practices that goes with your nature in order to harness it fully to reach your goal.
If you want to visualize, visualize the process of doing it, getting things done and doing it in a way that is the best that you can do at that time and continue to improve and become one of the top dogs in your field. This way it will not create the feeling as if you had achieved your goals and it’s much more productive as well as 90% – 99% of your time is spent going for your goal (spent on the process) and 10% or 1% in achieving it.
You have to take action, every day, finding reasons to continue and most importantly doing it for a sustainable long periods of time (we can be talking about years) and sometimes going for it every day without seeing results immediately. Know that this is normal, nature does not give the success you seek just because you visualized it, you have to persist and convince the world to give it to you by doing what needs to be done.
There is a whole universe of truth in this quote by napoleon hill in his book – Think and Grow Rich
“When riches begin to come they come so quickly, in such great abundance, that one wonders where they have been hiding during all those lean years”.
So keep at it, build on it, work for it without think about the reward and when it comes, it will come in a fury that you wonder where the hell the reward come from. And it starts from, not telling anyone what you’re doing.
