Hey everyone, my name is Jay,I'm a 22 year old student currently working for State Farm in Northern California. I'm joining TheFastLane Forum to hopefully gain some insight on how to take the proper steps to starting my own business, make some friends by connecting with like minded individuals, and hopefully learn as much as possible.
How did I get into investing/business? I've read two of Robert Kiyosaki's books (I'm sure plenty of people have mixed views on him and the books), I've learned as much as I could from several mentors, and I'm constantly thinking of breaking from the mundane cycle of going to school to get a career, and I'm hoping to own my own business someday. (I have never invested into anything, nor do I know exactly what kind of business I want to run. I want to invent, not replicate.) I almost launched an automotive paint business last year, but California's laws made it really difficult for me. While the laws are changing to make the specific paint legal, I might take advantage of the monopoly since no one within a huge radius around me knows of the paint.
Not to toot my own horn, but I know I'm a natural leader with a strong outgoing personality. Pair that with how I view my money, and I feel like by not putting these traits to the test I would just be a wasting potential. While I have many interests, all varying from music production, video game development, cars, and even real estate, I just don't get excited about getting a degree for any of them and hoping to land a career, working that "9-5".
While I will always have much to learn, I feel "ready" to take the leap and start gaining some momentum in regards to starting a business of my own, or at least owning a rental property or investing in stocks. I'm young, and I want to take advantage of that in order to build a strong foundation for my future.
My main issue is that I haven't spent enough time thinking of a profitable business. Before I found this forum, I wanted to own my own Property Management Company... but after a lot of research and networking on various websites I felt as if that's not something that is as lucrative as I once thought. I come across a lot of ideas, but shoot them down because I feel as if the "market" isn't right for it anymore, or I find that they fall under the Self Employed category and not something I can hire people for and run a team that generates income.
I'm not asking for people to hold my hand, but I would love some insight from business owners (big and small) as to how they got past their obstacles and made the move into "The Fast Lane". I've read a few stories from here, and they're all really inspirational. I'm open to book recommendations or links to posts I may have missed.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to start making the right moves within this year!
