I have a few relatively successful ventures that I am involved in and I am getting more spare time now once these ventures (which are managed by other people) are operating smoothly.
That is why I want to start pursuing one of the dreams I always had, i.e. becoming a successful inventor.
Before asking my question to you I feel that I need to explain my definition of a ‘successful inventor’. For me a successful inventor is somebody who invents one or more functional products that solve actual problems faced by a very large number of people in their day-to-day life.
I have read several books about making money with inventions (e.g. ‘Turn your idea or invention into millions’ by Don Kracke and ‘How to license your million dollar idea’ by Harvey Reese). What I noticed is the fact that a lot of the inventions described in such books are toys or decorative things. Although I realize that this kind of inventions are useful since they make tons of people happy, they don’t fall into my own category of ‘successful inventions’ because they don’t solve a real problem. So, the ‘wannabe inventor’ in me would not be satisfied if I come up with a new toy or a new ‘pet rock’, even though that could make me a lot of money.
Now I come to my question:
I feel that I am quite good at problem-solving. Give me a problem (e.g. a vague product idea) and I’ll find several ways to develop a product to solve that problem, while not losing the manufacturing cost, an attractive design, etc., out of sight.
But how do I find actual problems that are worth solving and which therefore can result in a useful and successful (according to my perception) invention?
The common advice is to look critically at everything that you do during a normal day and think about how you can make those actions easier, so far did not result in new product ideas. How can I speed up the process of getting good ideas?
