So I've been working on my Business recently and felt that I would give a small update.
I originally set out knowing very little information, but wanting to help Medical offices go paperless. My original plan was this:
Design my own software and create a system that helps medical offices go paperless based on outstanding customer support and face to face interaction. I felt like the main thing holding Doctors back was the lack of support infrastructure in setting up the system and consolidation of tasks. I planned to do the scanning, design user friendly software and everything.
After hours and hours of research and talking with a SCORE advisor I have discovered two things:
There is a huge demand for this. Current 15% of Medical offices are paperless, by 2015 it is expected to be 80%. This is due to government interevention. Any office that gets a MEANINGFUL paperless system set up by 2011 will be getting 44000 per doctor back from the government. Considering the average cost per physician is 30,000-50,000 they have every incentive to upgrade. Not to mention all the savings/advantages of it.
Developing my own software is out of reach. Although I'd love to develop my own software, there are two things holding me back:
1. I don't know the industry. Although i've done the research, I do not know enough about the industry in order to develop my own software
2. Costs. No one in their right mind, be it private investor or small business loan is going to give me money to develop my own software with my lack of experience in the industry.
So my two options were:
Continue the developing my own software route and try to get a job with a current Medical office company (Hell no, my goal is to never have to enter the slowlane!)
Become a third party vendor for a company that already has an established software
-This allows me to still maintain my core system and idea(Selling myself on personal face to face attention and support. Taking care of all the jobs involved in helping a medical office go paperless rather than them having to find a different company for each job.
- This also allows me to learn the industry and opens up doors for my own software development in the future.
Although my idea has been morphed into much more of a slow lane venture, I feel their is still potential. It also allows me to start up RIGHT NOW assuming I can get a vendor license, without having to try to get a loan or develop a software.
My plan of action:
1. Contact e-clinicalworks(this is the first company I am trying)
2. Learn their softaware BACKWARD AND FORWARD.
3. I've got in touch with two doctors offices that will allow me to ask them questions and what not. So i need to write a questionairre for them(Still trying to get some numbers research for my sales pitch)
4. Design my website.
5. Buy a commercial scanner and shredder.(I'll be able to get this at cost from my step-dads company he works for, will be bought and paid for on first sale ideally.)
So, any problems with my plan of action, things I am missing, or general comments?
