I deliberately forgot about them because I think they are overpriced. Their flagship, the Nord Grand, has the same (with slights modifications) plastic action in my 1300 quid DP. And this action is good (the best probably) for a plastic action, but in a second league compared to wooden or hybrid actions. The sounds on the Nord Grand are good actually, but older stuff like the Nord Stage 3 sounds horrible to me (apart from having shit actions) while being expensive as hell. Nord probably think they are the Apple of pianos, but I think they failed. Some people enjoy them though and pay the extra for whatever reason they think it's worth it. I'm cool with that, more brands means more competition means better pianos from other brands.Maybe in terms of people buying them, but you forgot Nord Pianos, the pinnacle of digital pianos.
Agree. People spending 9000 on a hybrid have monies to spend on VSTs. I've seen people comparing Garritan with Yahama hybrid onboard sounds. Since I don't like the sound of any Yamaha, even acoustics, I haven't checked in detail. But some people are happy enough with some onboard sounds. In my opinion, the higher you go and the better the keys/touch feel, the less people actually use the standard sound, but aim for a VST (think Garritan CFX). (Check the latency on the VST though before you buy anything. It should be simultaneous with the playing)
I mean that ES110 has more sympathetic resonances, for example. Of course, you might like the P125 more. Sound preferences are like ice cream flavours. The usual agreement among people reviewing DPs is that Kawai tends to provide better sounds, that's why I mentioned. But "better" is subjective, so it's more about "more people tend to like this or that brand's onboard sounds".You mean that the ES110 is brighter? I have a P125 and I listened to ES110 audio demos and it sounds cheap as hell imo. The P125 audio however I find honestly really good for its price, especially with the integrated app where you can change the sound (honestly really fun).
I remember the P125 to sound quite good, but didn't like it as much personally. I didn't have the chance to try it myself though.
Yeah, I heard the actions on Roland's tend to be heavy, which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. The modelling they use is not great to my ears, which is one of the reasons why I dislike them. But it's good to hear that other people have a different opinion. The only one I like is the RD2000, and even that doesn't sound great to me. But again, different ears, different tastes.I've played on a the FP30 multiple times and the action is way heavier than the P125 and the sound is indeed kinda meh (prolly still better than Kawai though). And from what I heard, it's actually the best keyboard touch-wise in that price range. I also kinda liked it, but I am not sure if I really would've preferred it over my P125 long-term. Always try them out in person!!
By "they are recordings" I mean that they sample (record) every key in different levels of intensity and other variants. This is again orange ice cream vs mint ice cream, everyone likes it different and there is no right choice. I like listening to a recording made with a sampled piano (VSL Steinway, for example), but I don't like playing with it. Even within sampled pianos, there are people who dislike one VST or another because of static noise or lack of, among other variables, so there's no right choice here. And they fill in the gaps between layers with volume, as they don't record 127 layers. So you can't really get different "colours" some times, and you can hear the change from one layer to another if you hear closely. This doesn't happen with modeled pianos as much, so I like them more for playing. For recording, I'd probably use something like this CONCERT D-274 - Vienna Symphonic Library, which sounds to me like a great recording. I don't think modelling is quite there yet (it might never be) in terms of authenticity, but for playing it works better for me and many others. This doesn't mean other people don't like it the other way around, that's fine.Don't get me wrong, I don't have any expensive piano VSTs, but people have rendered audio with them for me and in my old youtube-niche, I was surrounded by VSTs 24/7 and I don't think your "they are recordings, so I don't like them" opinion is certified. Cuz (for example) the Garritan CFX sounds AMAZING and I think your problem with the recording-aspect lies more inside you.
However, I've heard great things about the VSL sounds as well.
Fittingly, here is a video of them BOTH, comparing each other:
Of course my problem with Garritan lies inside me (inside my ears, specifically). But consider replacing the word problem with taste, as everyone has their one I find the Garritan bland and generic, while others think it is the ultimate shit. That's fine, it doesn't make me or other people with similar a taste lose sleep and everyone is happy with their preferred toy.
Anyway, that was just to share my experience and taste with OP. I don't want to turn this into a pianoworld forum type of debate, as I know some people can have very strong opinions around DPs, VSTs, actions, and even piano benches
