It’s a sad reality that with success comes money, and with money comes a need to refine the intentional choice to create a system of self-preservation through vigilance. There are specific areas of vulnerability that you need to do a self-inventory on. Not only do you need to teach yourself to have a stronger mental awareness than maybe you have needed previously, but you need to take intentional measures to guard your business, your family, and yourself from external threats. When you have nothing to take you’re of little interest to potential scammers, thieves, and people looking for targets. The more successful, or even perceived successful you are… the more likely it is that you will at some point come under attack.
Gals, please don't misread ANY of my comments to be sexist. While I consider part of my responsibility to safeguard my wife and my kids, you are equally capable as I am of deploying ANY of the resources discussed below. I tend to talk to men about protecting their families, but were you to meet my daughter you would see a confident, capable gal who is brilliant, beautiful yet tough as nails, and absolutely able to hold her own in any circumstance. Gals, I hope you read this and assess your own personal situation, and that of your family... and build protections for your business, your family and yourself. In this politically correct era that we live in, I might address the basic need to be the "protector" to guys, fully realizing that we ALL should take the same approach and safeguards towards self preservation. I am 100% interested in this information being applicable to EVERYONE. Please read it with that spirit in mind.
Please note that due to certain certifications that I hold in the State of Minnesota, I am required (by law) to tell you that this thread does not constitute legal advice, nor am I an attorney and I am not eligible to practice law. A lot of these topics could be expounded on for you by an attorney.
vigilant - adj. carefully observant or attentive; on the lookout for possible danger; open-eyed awareness
Guard Your Business:
In a single thread, I can’t successfully outline for you all of the ways that a successful business can become a target. When it comes to protecting your business from external threats, I am not talking about competitive threats. I am more concerned about vulnerabilities in terms of corporate structure, internal or external threats, and liability. The purpose of this thread is to get you thinking about creating a tangible wall of protection around your business. Probably the single best resource person dealing with corporate/company protection on this forum in this regard is Global Wealth. Search out some of his threads where he talks about various layers of protection to shield your business from external threats through corporate structure.
Further, insurance coverage is available for every conceivable risk your business might face. General liability insurance, commercial property insurance… even home business insurance might be things to consider. Errors and omissions, directors and officers insurance, and key employee insurance. What ever vulnerability your particular business has, you can under write.
Be vigilant about protecting your business. You need to consider threats from thieves, customers, and employees. Successful business owners will have a methodical, documented strategy to build walls around their business to protect it from external threats. The more successful you are, the more likely it is that you will be prodded for vulnerability. What will they find when they look to see what they can take from you?
Guard Your Family:
I make my living in the personal protection industry. Because of that, we track trends in personal security. With increasing frequency, people are victimized in a variety of ways. The answer to most of these situations is awareness, vigilance, and planned personal protection. Safety generally doesn’t happen by accident.
There are several ways that you can consider guarding your loved ones. Most critically is that you assess their preparedness to handle emergencies, from home invasions to assaults. The purpose of this thread is to get you to consider whether or not you have taken any measures to safeguard your family.
Is your home secure? Do you have a security system, a dog, or other alert systems to let you know if there are any aberrations to your family’s security? Most people think that the things we read about in the news papers will never happen to them. I urge you at some point over the next few days to take a mental inventory. It’s YOUR JOB to ensure that you have adequate safeguards in place to protect the people you love.
I personally recommend Krav Maga classes for ANY family member (starting maybe around 13 years of age and older). Krav Maga is a noncompetitive martial art and eclectic self-defense system developed in Israel that involves striking techniques, wrestling and grappling. Krav Maga is known for its focus on real-world situations and extremely efficient, brutal counter-attacks. It doesn’t include any of the pageantry that traditional self-defense classes might offer. It teaches action and muscle memory that can be reflexive in the event of a physical emergency. If you want to know about self-defense strategies for you and your family, Kung Fu Steve here on the forum might be an excellent resource for you.
I also recommend that you equip the women in your life with personal alarms, mace, weapons training where appropriate, and any other tools you can provide them with to increase their vigilance and provide them with a means of protection and counter attack measures.
My daughter was taught from an early age to fight back to the death. She was given some basic Krav Maga classes, typically has at least one non-obvious weapon with her, and likely also has a rape alarm with her in public. In short, she’s the wrong gal to attack. She’s got a great chance of turning the tables on you, and you’re not about to kidnap her or worse.
How about you? What measures do you have in place to ensure the security of your family? Security doesn’t happen by accident. The higher your profile, the more wealth and success you experience… the more likely your family is to come under attack. Give them the tools to increase their vigilance and to launch a counter offensive if ever needed. Hopefully they will never need them --- but if they do you need to have them prepared.
Guard Yourself
I was playing high stakes blackjack a few months back. Without boring you with all the details of the encounter, I was watched for a while in the casino and then targeted by a female who for reasons still unknown tried everything she could to get a ride from me to a remote location. What ever fate awaited me during or after the ride (from allegations, to robbery or worse) might have befallen a nicer person than me who wasn’t aware of what was developing and wasn’t obsessed with awareness, vigilance, and personal protection.
Billy Graham had a policy of never being alone with a woman other than his wife. Married guys… do you go out to lunch with female business associates alone? Would you offer a ride to a stranger with a down and out story at the airport? Do you do things to keep yourselves above reproach? Remember that all that is needed to penetrate your walls of protection these days is a simple allegation. You don't need to have actually have done anything wrong to have your life turned upside down.
Consider the Craigslist psychotic stories that happen across the country on a semi-regular basis. I propose to you that an intentional practice of being aware of your surroundings is a life skill you should intentionally master. Self-defense classes can help fine-tune your situational awareness skills. Vigilance is intentional.
Certainly the recent mass murder in the Colorado movie theater was a tragedy, and many of the victims were directly in the path of a homicidal nutcase. There was nothing many could have done in that situation. However, would situational awareness have helped any of them? Could the nearest person to the killer have disarmed him? Could the furthest person from the killer, with a fine tuned situational awareness radar, have detected and taken self preservation matters more quickly to increase their own odds of survival? Would YOU know what to do in a similar circumstance? Preparation may not have helped those victims, but it certainly never could HURT you.
Please invest in yourself. At least consider where you are at today. Do you operate from a vigilant perspective? Do you have any self-preservation skills? Are you aware of your surroundings? Is your home secure? Your place of business? Your car? Do you know what you might do in the event you were ever assaulted? Today may be the first time you take a mental inventory of these things. You may never need to draw on any of what you prepare for. If you don’t, great.
The more successful you are, the more attractive of a target you are to a variety of people who would take from you what you have. Are you prepared to counter any types of attacks, be it physical, accusational, or other? Do you have safeguard measures in place to guard yourself and make yourself less vulnerable?
Sorry for this extremely long, passionate message. I implore you to consider an intentional strategy towards vigilance and protection of your business, your family and/or loved ones, and yourself.
