How much sleep do you get?

Writing this before I get a measly 3 hours of sleep.

I sleep poorly, drink coffee when I wake up, go to school, get home and sleep for 4-5 hours, then go back to sleep.

It's pretty damn frustrating since my whole day is taken up if I decide to pass out ( I usually always do).

Next week I think I'll try getting 7-8 hours of sleep for school and dropping coffee, I'll let you guys know how it's going.

Not even sure what the point of this post was, probably just to vent lol.

I can function on 6 hours of sleep each night, but feel muuuch better with 8 hours. I have tried to live on 6 hours of sleep and eventually I feel "run down" and never fully refreshed. It takes me about a month of 8 hours to feel fully recovered. Your mileage may vary.

Personally, I've given up on the reduced sleep schedule.

you guys that claim you sleep 4 to 5 hours a night and then power nap for 30 minutes are full of shit. You're grossly exaggerating your sleeping habits.

unless you've got the perfect body, the perfect nutrition, and use stimulants, there is no way your body can maintain that.. OR you're lieing to us and not telling us the whole story.

e.g. you sleep 4 hours a night and then on the weekend you sleep all day.

Not necessarily true. About 1% of the population are genetic short sleepers. Lucky bastards....

I'm a gremlin if I get less than 7.

Usually I sleep around 7 - 8 hours in a weekdays and 8 - 9 hours in the weekends. Sometimes I have nights when I sleep less, like 3 - 4 hours but it doesn't happen often and if it happens, next day my productivity drops drastically.

It is not important how many hours you sleep but how you sleep.

You must check the quality of your sleep.

The deep.

I recommend you this excellent app: Sleep Cycle.

At the moment, it's around 8 hours. More and I'm wide awake in bed, less and my eyes won't open.

Workout in the morning or noon, not at night (all that blood pumping through your body)

Agree with all your points, except this one.
Getting your bloop pumping is good, there really is no time for it. Also it has the added benefit of pumping oxygen to your brain, which help you recover and sleep even better.
I second going easy on sugar, and not eating before going to bed.

Sleep is the result of being tired. If you do nothing to tire your body, you will get poor quality sleep. If your body is exhausted (within reason), you will get good quality sleep.

I sleep natural o'clock. I got to bed around 9-10 and trust my body to wake up naturally at the right time. Usually this is around 5-6.

I used to wake up at 3am for around 4 months. I got a lot done but I think it is quite hard to keep it going year round.

You need to master rest-work cycles to work effectively. We are not robots, we are emotional creatures and continuously have different needs. Trust your body.

Question:

For those of you that do the 20-25 min nap in the day, HOW do you do this?

I might lay down for a 20 min nap, but I end up sleeping 2-3 hours and feeling groggy.

If I set an alarm to go off in 20 minutes, all that happens is I lay there in bed awake and then the alarm rings and I feel like I wasted 20 minutes being awake in the bed.

If I set it for 50 minutes, I end up going to sleep within 2 minutes or so and get into deeper sleep and wake up groggy.

Trying to find out how to really get it to 20-30 min of sleep.

Is there a device that KNOWS when I fall asleep and then counts down 20 minutes by chance?

I go to bed at 10PM (sometimes a challenge to be in bed by 10) every night and wake up at 4AM. (6 hours)

First thing I do is take a few big gulps gulps of water from the daily gallon to replenish the lack of water from the 6 hours of sleep. This instantly makes you feel more awake. Water is so important. I never drink coffee, my energy comes from gulping water throughout the day.

Next, bathroom, brush teeth, then get number 1 and 2 done. Then, hop into a freezing cold 5-7 minute shower.

1 hour miracle morning. 30 minute breakfast prep and eat. At the gym by 6AM, out by 7AM.

Then off to MCD's or Starbucks for a little work before my 8AM slowlane.

Out at 4PM, 5-20 min nap at home, then off to Starbucks/Library for fastlane work for the rest of the day.

Question:
For those of you that do the 20-25 min nap in the day, HOW do you do this?

I usually set a 22-23 minute timer, gives me a little 2-3 minute buffer to fall asleep. I fall asleep very fast and can usually fall asleep anywhere though.
Optimal nap time is 5-20 minutes however, so even if I don't fall asleep in time for 20 minutes, I just tell myself even if I fall asleep for AT LEAST 5 minutes, I should be good. This lets me not worry too much about the timer, and just let myself rest and fall asleep.

Just make sure to GET UP after the timer goes off. You might feel like you want to keep napping obviously, but by JUST GETTING UP, you feel the benefits within just a couple minutes, more alert, clearer mind, more awake, etc. It literally feels like you drank a cup of coffee.

However everyone is different. You may be interested in 90 minute naps. This lets your body go through a light sleep cycle, to a deep one, and then back to a light one. 90 minute naps have shown to improve memory and creativity.

Get home from work around 1AM, set alarm to 9AM.
so 7-8 hours, but if i wake up before the alarm i just get up.
on weekends i don't set alarm but im actually not happy sleeping 12 hours on weekends lol, i gotta curb that habit.
i got off the night shift about 3 months ago and it took a lot of effort for me to readjust, it was very very tough to get out of bed for awhile.

4.5 to 5.5 hours. no more no less. if i sleep for 4 hours i will take a power nap during the day for 20-30 minutes.

sleep is vital but nowadays it is difficult to get 7-8 hours (when starting the hustle) afterwards in my 40's i intend to sleep 8-9 hours so on and so forth as age increases...

i drink 1 to 1.5 gallons a day that helps with balance alkaline water at 9.1 and 8.8 ph levels.

I usually get about 2~5 hours of sleep a night. I found that if I get more than about 5 hours, I tend to be more groggy the next day.

I believe we are all different though. Some people require less sleep than others. The key is finding what works best for you, for optimal efficiency.

On the the topic of waking up without an alarm.

It seems whenever I tell myself I will wake up at "X" time, i seem to ALWAYS wake up plus/minus 5 minutes of that time

Just had to share

I have the similar thing. Except I usually wake up minus 2-20 minutes. But if I go to bed very late it doesn't happen.

Yeah, happens to me all the time. It's pretty great too because waking up on your own is much better than waking up to a blaring alarm.

Don't know if you want to do that as a lifestyle choice but biologically you sleep less the older you get.

Question for those of you that sleep less than six hours a night (@AllenCrawley @StarKodomo @Arun Siva). How would y'all rate the quality of your sleep? Are you following specific bedtime rituals, using really comfortable mattresses, etc?

I can sleep for 8-9 hours but still feel like shit, or get exhausted halfway through the day. And less than 6 can make me loopy or depersonalized. But, I tend to sleep on an aging, saggy mattress and I wake up multiple times throughout the night.

I tried it couple times, It worked better than I expected at first but after a while I feel like my body began to deteriorate. I began to feel lazy and tired. I think it's a great thing to do occasionally but continuously after a while your body began to shut down unexpectedly. For instance I decided that I am going to sleep for 30 minutes but instead I woke up in like 2 hours after.

I know other persons such as computer programmers who don't seem to get much sleep at all(probably 2 - 3 hours a day). They believed that sleeping 8 hours is an illusion. So they wired their mind over a long period of time to don't sleep much and still do productive work. I would encourage you to still try it because it would be interesting to hear your story and feedback on the polyphasic sleeping methodology .

Ok thank your for your return... :)

Very good sleep. We do we have pillow top mattress with a 3" topper. Very comfortable. I also drink bulletproof coffee every day. Try to eat as paleo as possible. Those two things really help with energy levels.

Thanks! Might be time to adjuust my diet (and start picking up heavy things again). Perhaps the sugary coffee I drink doesn't help either.

I sleep very deep and well. Nothing too special about our mattress though. It is newer (i think), less than 4 years old.

I'm with @AllenCrawley, I usually start my day with a large black coffee.

Lately though, my wife has been complaining about me snoring. It seems the more tired I am, the louder I snore at night.

Thanks! I'm a snorer myself, annoys the gf.

I let myself rest. I think everyone should. No hours counted. I find that waking up too early ends in more sleep the next day.

http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/matters/consequences
Study after study has revealed that people who sleep poorly are at greater risk for a number of diseases and health problems.

There's no sound reason for Trump to sleep so little. He's living in abundance and compromising his health. It can be hype and lies or greed, which is a sort of mental instability.

As for polyphasic sleep, I'm confident that evolution has chosen the best pattern of sleep for us.

Save time somewhere else.

I get anywhere between 6-9 hours although 6 hours is said to be enough. before you start sleeping less, try planning your day the night before by writing everything down in a notebook this way you can manage your time better, if you find this is still not enough look to reduce your sleep hours.

Don't know how people can survive on anything less than 6 hours. Your body NEEDS the rest to repair and give you energy. Whenever I don't get at least 8-9 hours I feel groggy and slow.

About 4 hours, these days. It's not really enough for me, but I've never been the type of person who can sleep before midnight, and it's common for me to stay up until 5-6 am. At the same time, if I sleep into the afternoon, I feel like I've wasted the day, so I end up staying awake most of the time.

By the way, I'm not recommending anyone else do this, because it's not very healthy.
