Well shit. I caught my latest injury yesterday. Started a roll standing in BJJ class. My opponent shot for the single leg and grabbed it. I noticed his leg was within reach, so I took a single leg of my own. About 3 seconds later, my knee popped and I fell to the ground. It felt like a rolled ankle of the knee. After a few minutes the pain subsided. I still had full range of motion, so I continued rolling and even tapped several people.
When I got home, I followed standard RICE procedure. By evening, my leg was much more stiff and bending or straightening became painful. By morning, I could barely put weight on the leg and bending/straightening became excruciating. It got a bit better as my leg warmed up, but I sent the doc a message to see if he can take a look. As of now, I may have to withdraw from the tournament. I've never damaged a knee so don't know how bad it is, but I do know that when I bend or straighten too far, I scream and shed tears lol.
From the sound of it, I've had similar injuries. They take time to heal but usually aren't severe. The reason you were fine for a while but then got really bad later on is because of inflammation.
When is your tournament? A few years ago when I was learning to ski, I fell on my wrist and even though I was fine initially, by the time I got to bed it was very swollen and painful to the point I couldn't even bend my fingers to wash my hands, let alone the wrist itself.
I took an NSAID so I could sleep and then another one in the morning and it brought down the inflammation so much that I was able to ski all day again (though I pretended my hand was amputated). A day later, I was doing pull-ups and push-ups on my fists without issues.
I generally avoid NSAIDs, but they're really good for injuries like the one I had (and not just symptomatic relief but also recovery.)
Try taking an NSAID and take note of how your knee feels 40-50 minutes later. If it's significantly better, you'll probably recover faster than you think.
