So I have been helping with a local program helping high school students who are in danger of not graduating turn it around and become successful. Since I am a guest I try to keep my mouth shut and be polite but I don't think what they are teaching is going to make a difference. Why? Well their "strategy" for making change is Listening to uplifting music, positive self talk, and rewarding yourself. While these ARE important there is really only one way to change, and that is having the desire to do so. Whether it's financially or physically, emotionally or spiritually, you have to WANT to change. Tony teaches some great stuff from Richard Bandler (co-founder of NLP) and since I invited my father to check out this program I've been attending today I sent him my thoughts on it and I thought I'd share it with everyone so hopefully it can do something for ya'll :smxB:

1. Change is not permanent. The philosophy that you can one day make a change and never have to do anything again is ludicrous. If that was true we would all exercise one time and have a six pack for the rest of our lives. The first thing to understand is that change comes from conditioning. Yes, change can happen in an instant. But if you are not constantly conditioning or reinforcing that change, you will be swept away in everyone else's conditioning.
2. Here's how you really make change permanent. Get leverage on yourself. We will not change unless we really want to. Whether you want to change or not, you must gather enough leverage on yourself to actually take action. Meaning: create enough powerful reasons why you MUST change, not should, not could, MUST. Associate Pain to the old behavior. We only do anything in life for two reasons, to avoid pain or gain pleasure. The more pain you associate to the old behavior the more you will try to avoid it. Associate Pleasure to the new behavior. What good will this new behavior bring? What will you ultimately get because of it? What will you gain from practicing this new behavior? And finally, Condition the new behavior. Why is it someone stops smoking for many years and then starts again? Because they have been reconditioned to do so. Why is it someone works out all the time and suddenly stops? Their environment conditions them otherwise (in addition to mental states and attitude).
So bottom line if those kids are going to change in any way shape or form, they literally need to follow these steps. They are the "master steps" to creating change and will work in any area. Getting themselves to exercise, getting themselves to study, getting themselves to go to class, whatever. See you in sparring tonight, can't wait to kick you in the head!
