Yesterday the mens' fellowship I attend these days managed to get hold of Idris Jala.
He was the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, directed various subsidaries of Shell, reformed the national airlines once...and is currently heading a global consultancy firm.
He shared how during his time in Shell, he had to pull in biz tricks that the oil & gas people would laugh at. Just to stay profitable.
One of it was to actually give the raw diesel and kerosene for free to overseas clients to figure out new ways on using them-- instead of the other way round. One Australian BBQ giant loved their kerosene as BBQ fuel...so they agreed to pay Shell 3X the regular price, in exchange for the removal of the 'Made in Malaysia' label.
Come to think of it, this approach is not too far fetched from how tech startup folks let the market decide how the final product will look like/work.
Idris must have been reading tech stuffs, and pulled in ideas from there. A regular O&G man would not do this-- he would be too worried about the extra costs, especially when the biz itself is already bleeding.
So I find it's about finding as many new ideas as you can-- be it from new people, books or environments.
Even though they may come from places one might never usually go to in their lifetime.
