I don't think this is worth a bounty but I desperately want to purchase a body re-composition tool that's easy to use and accurate enough that it could rival the DEXA while not giving a 50 50 split between user reviews. It's 3 am pushing 4 and I've spent too much time looking for the one smart scale that is actually consistent among user reviews and is easy to use. Clearly no one is solving this problem correctly, they're all half-assing it and while that might be fine for the average user who's looking to follow a trend, it doesn't help that the measurements vary between each scale and between the times you measure yourself on a scale even if that was only a second ago. I purchased the Etekcity smart scale trusting the positive reviews and it boldly told me that I was 13.4% body fat like a cover model when I know that's way too inaccurate. I would easily drop $80 on an accurate tool like this since if you can't measure it you can't manage it.

Most of this simply comes down to the science. Bioelectric impedance analysis correlates with body fat percentage but has poor predictive value. It simply isn't a precise method of measurement.

The best ones take reading through both the feet and the hands. Using just feet or just hands basically measures 1/2 the body.

The best thing about these scales is convince. They aren't capable of being precise. The can be useful for tracking changes over time, but that's it.

The best home measurement are actually much simpler:
1st, body fat calipers. This is the most precise, but does take some skill.
2nd, a tape measure and online calculator. Men have it easier as we're more consistent where we store fat, so women have to take a few more measurements. This is the easy method for most people, but it is more work than simply stepping on a scale.

The idea that you need a precise electronic measurement device to manage body fat is nonsense. People figured out the basics of how to do this before we figured out electricity.
